I find that dumb as well. It fit the tone of current Luke. He had no reason at that moment to just accept that saber, as if it should propel him to change his outlook on life and his place in the galaxy.
he wouldnt be in hiding if he was eager for a student
Though one might consider the fact he left a map with R2 so he could also be found if need be...
That is a disconnect of sorts.
Oh yeah. That's interesting. Remind me, do we know that Luke definitely gave R2 that piece of the map?
Can’t say for sure.
I fuckin love his reunion with R2 tho. And R2 giving him shit and Luke saying hey watch your language and then showing him the Leia hologram

This seems like a very dumb thing to get hung up on. Lightsabers are not all that meaningful in the grand scheme of power with the Force. What good was a lightsaber to Kylo when Luke projected himself on Crait? What good was a lightsaber when Luke confronted the Emperor in the OT?

We don't.
I didn't think so. That's just something we all assumed right? That could be an interesting thing to further explore. Not that it's necessary, just interesting.

Luke and R2's reunion is one of my absolute favorite things in all of the Star Wars film so far. That was my personal "Chewie, we're home" moment. I was a joyful mess the entire scene.
There was a thousand other ways to do it and they chose they comedy route.
Does Luke seem like he’s in a fuckin funny headspace to you??
It contradicts especially where the character is at.
It was an FU from Johnson simple as that
We think it's funny. I don't think Luke or Rey think it's funny. It perfectly jibes with Luke's head space. He even calls the thing a "laser sword" for crying out loud. And he uses the term so sarcastically. I think it makes all the sense in the world.
If he called it a laser sword that makes it twice as bad.
He calls it that later. (paraphrasing) "What do you expect me to do, face down the entire First Order with my laser sword."
The best part is... that's fucking exactly what he does! Love it.

Exactly. And the movie doubles down on this idea. It's actually a key theme/concept to this film.
I mean, I don't think there's a single shot of a light saber hitting another light saber in this movie.

also i assume the principled hostility to light touches in tense scenes extends to Han’s response to the status report after the prison shootout in ep IV.

we’re all fine here. How are you?
Exactly. There's a lot of recency bias going on with the lighter elements in this film. I guess that's to be expected to a certain degree. There is so much goofy humor in the OT, it's hard to take these complaints seriously when ppl claim it was offensive to fans.
It's nuts right? I wasn't 100% sure but I told my wife as we walked out of the theater that I was pretty sure no lightsabers actually touched. Crazy for a Star Wars film not titled Rogue One.
