Why not give Duncan Jones a shot?

He and Brad Bird were my top choices.

Not opposed to this. It's all about a great script, something JJ's never really had (other than the pilot for LOST). Abrams excels with character dynamics and energy, so if the script's got the goods, this will be good.

Is this a bad thing? I mean, it can't be any worse than Lucas directing, right?

I think it's a great thing. He was my personal favorite candidate to tackle the project.

But he's stated publicly multiple times that he wasn't going to do it; that he wanted to watch it as a fan. If the report is true and he's changed his mind, I'm super excited about it.

Though, there is a bit of a conflict of interest with the Star Trek franchise. Interesting to see how he differentiates those two universes visually.

This was posted on comingsoon.net only a month ago:

"[Abrams] added that "there were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek, and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them."

JJ Abrams is set to direct the next Star Wars movie.

The Star Trek helmer will oversee Episode 7 in the sci-fi movie franchise, which was announced last year after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in a multi-billion dollar deal.

The Wrap reports that Argo's Ben Affleck was also in contention for the coveted position, but that Abrams has won the role. An insider also told Deadline: "It's a done deal with JJ."

Abrams had appeared to rule himself out of the running to direct the film in December, citing his commitment to Star Trek.

"There were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek, and also just being a fan [of Star Wars], I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things," he previously said.

"I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them."

Star Wars Episode 7 - due to be released in 2015 - is being written by Toy Story 3 screenwriter Michael Arndt.

Joss Whedon, Guillermo del Toro, Wes Anderson and Steven Spielberg had all previously ruled themselves out of helming the film, while Zack Snyder was forced to deny that he was prepping a non-trilogy Star Wars film based loosely on Seven Samurai.

Ewan McGregor, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill have expressed a willingness to return to the franchise, with Harrison Ford reportedly hoping to play Han Solo again.

Samuel L Jackson has also expressed his excitement about the new films, and quipped that his character Jedi Master Mace Windu could easily return despite appearing to die in Revenge of the Sith.

"[I'm] totally geeked by the idea of there being more Star Wars," he said. "It's like, okay, Obi-Wan was dead when episode four started, so maybe everyone thinks I'm dead and we'll find out what happened to Mace Windu.

"I can come back as one-armed or a one-handed Jedi that's still around that didn't actually die."

yes and Abrams doesnt get too carried away with CGI. He brings a sense of realness and mystery to his films. Im very excited if this is all true.

The CGI in Star Trek is pretty fantastic. And Super 8, too, albeit to a slightly lesser degree.

But I kind of hope they go with a different director for each episode from here on out. Let Abrams get the ball rolling. Then hand off to someone else for episode 8. Maybe somebody like Fincher that can go darker with the thing.

I think Fincher would have zero desire to direct a SW movie.

I'm sure you're right. Doesn't change my desire to see a Fincher directed SW movie.

I hope the new trilogy just fucking buries the prequels. Much like I hope Pearl Jams new album just buries the last 5 years of their career.

If you have Netflix, don't forget House of Cards on February 1. Fincher and Spacey together again.
