I'm not sure how much can be done in one game like this but it would be great if there were a variety of characters you could choose to play, like an analog real life RPG.
Assuming that isn't possible just because of space and cost and all of that, then I'd probably rather be a Jedi than not. Either way, this is exciting news and I'm looking forward to seeing what this ends up being. I'm sure I'll play it. It's something I've been wanting since the OG Knights of the Old Republic game.
The developer previously made an online, team based looter shooter (I realize this means nothing to non-gamers), so I'm a little cautious of the scope of this game. They'll have the full muscle of other studios under the Ubisoft umbrella to collaborate with though.
I would love to see a quasi-open world game with a squad (ala Mass Effect) more than one focused on a single character.

Because I'm not a gamer -- is an open-world game with a squad (which is also more of what I'd like maybe) possible without an online feature? Like can you have several "main characters" to chose from. Each time you play the game could/would be different depending on which character you're playing? Is it possible to have an open-world game with multiple stories that doesn't require you to play with other people, I guess?

If this isn’t one player it’s pointless.
The online gaming has been ruined by assholes and kids who are just too good at it. They’ve made losses relative to how popular that platform should be be owed of them.
Lock it into one player. At least initially. Give the option later for online.
Online games are much better imo, doesn’t mean you can’t play by yourself. Like Destiny is an open world online game, but still one player if you wish it to be. Makes a much more vibrant atmosphere to play in, than f.ex. the previous Star Wars game (Jedi: Fallen Order).

An unlikely comparison to a Star Wars game, even if it’s well made.
I wasn’t comparing, just saying that kind of model would be ideal for it. I haven’t played any of the Star Wars games Since podracer. What I’ve seen of them especially the new ones just doesn’t sing to me as an enjoyable experience and the many Star Wars podcasts I listen to, bear that out. They just haven’t managed to do a satisfying Star Wars experience in game form yet and there’s consensus on that generally. And the online aspect is the biggest complaint about it. Fallen order seems to be a step in the right direction but I hope they go all in with this new one and BOTW is a pretty perfect template to follow. (For what I’d want to play. I understand not everyone would. But again, the ‘community’ im involved in in SW all say the same thing.)
A shame if people think so. Battlefront 2 is one of the best games I’ve played. Jedi: Fallen Order was decent. Well worth playing.
Of course people have different opinions, just like with movies. For me BOTW is not among my ten best Switch games (out of 100+), and not what I would want from a Star Wars game at all.
