Boba and Han were both scoundrels. Han was a spice runner, we saw the damage the spice trade did in Book of Boba. Han got in debt, had a chance to pay it off and didn't. He knew what he was doing. Han knew that as well, and would have helped Boba if they crossed paths in this series. He even went back to his old ways between Jedi and Force.

Ooooh! Can we talk about how the Boba Fett is coded as the "white savior" of the Tusken Raider "indigenous people"??

Racism, indeed!

Somebody should really look into this star war universe for its problematic tropes

Boba Fett isn't white.

"Coded as"

The Tusken episodes are just a retelling of Dances with Wolves. Boba Fett is part of the Star Wars universe's colonial class, despite the irony of Morrison being indigenous.

I'm trying not to be too sarcastic here because that's backfired on me today in a big way.

So, in all sincerity, I haven't seen Dances With Wolves. But I'm not sure how Boba's story with the Raiders is a coded white savior story. Can you extrapolate it for me?

wikipedia wrote:
The white savior is a cinematic trope in which a white central character rescues non-white (often less prominent) characters from unfortunate circumstances.[1] This recurs in an array of genres in American cinema, wherein a white protagonist is portrayed as a messianic figure who often learns something about themself in the course of rescuing non-white characters from their plight.[1][2]

The narrative trope of the white savior is one way the mass communications medium of cinema represents the sociology of race and ethnic relations, by presenting abstract concepts such as morality as characteristics innate, racially and culturally, to white people, not to be found in non-white people.[3] This white savior is often portrayed as a man who is out of place within his own society, until he assumes the burden of racial leadership to rescue non-white minorities and foreigners from their suffering. As such, white savior stories have been described as "essentially grandiose, exhibitionistic, and narcissistic" fantasies of psychological compensation.[4]

Boba Fett is the colonial class who must save the native people from the threat (the Pyke) that they are unable defeat because of their backwards, neo-luddism. In the process he discovers himself by way of their mystical ceremonies.

Here's the plot of Dances with Wolves.

Quote:
A Civil War soldier develops a relationship with a band of Lakota Indians. Attracted by the simplicity of their lifestyle, he chooses to leave his former life behind to be with them. Having observed him, they give the name Dances With Wolves. Soon he is a welcomed member of the tribe and falls in love with a white woman who has been raised in the tribe. Tragedy results when Union soldiers arrive with designs on the land.

Like I said in the other thread, I'm reading up on the discussion now. But thank you for the response, B. I appreciate it.

Maybe this should be moved to the Fett thread, but to be clear, there are obvious issues with the storyline in BoBF. It's problematic af! But the "white savior" trope is an angle I hadn't seen discussed. I'm reading some articles right now about that framing. I'm surprised I missed so much of this controversy/conversation in real time.

I do remember reading/hearing these takes when BOBF was airing. I do not know if anyone has asked Temuera Morrison about it directly, but I would be interested to hear his take.

What if it was a subversion of the trope because it was POC helping POC?

Very well could be. Before Attack of the Clones, his best-known role was probably Once Were Warriors (shout-out to the RM Film Club, you were too beautiful for this world), which was all about postcolonialism in New Zealand. I am sure the filmmakers were aware of his history.

Maybe, what does "person of color" even mean in the Star Wars universe. "Colonizer" and "indigenous people" have meaning, but race and color mean less.

Didn't I delete your account?

Also, that was addressed when I first brought this up.
