Yeah. I think it's probably traceable back to the Atlanta '94 show, where Eddie screamed the curse word himself. People (generally under the age of 15) were pretty impressed by that back in the day. Now those people are in their mid-30's.

I tried to start the tradition of everyone pulling a quarter from behind their ear during Sleight of Hand, but it didn't catch on.
