The all-new rank your shows thread

Wed October 22, 2014 8:59 pm

I looked for the old thread and I couldn't find it, and PJ have played quite a few shows since it disappeared from here. This thread needs resurrecting, I guess.

I've only been to eight shows but at least they were all memorable, in one way, shape or form.

1. 7/22/2006 - Gorge 1. Easily the best. Great setlist, great energy, great venue, a ton of firsts for me and Ed sounded great.
2. 4/23/2003 - Champaign. Incredible show, incredible energy. It was a great first show because it felt like a show from 1993/94, both because of the setlist and because of the energy, and also because of the size of the venue.
3. 11/29/2013 - Portland. A fun show with a good setlist, a lot of energy and a great crowd. Oh, and "Deep" and "All Those Yesterdays".
4. 9/26/2009 - Ridgefield (Portland). An unexpectedly great show with a good setlist and great versions of a lot of songs. The opening 4 songs were excellent, and all of encore 2 was amazing. Oh, and "Golden State" was great.
5. 7/20/2006 - Portland. Tiny venue and great seats, and a great setlist. It was great to hear "Sad", "Brain of J", "Satan's Bed", "Parachutes" and "Harvest Moon" with Sleater-Kinney. Oh, and Sleater-Kinney opened. I loved this show.
6. 10/05/2004 - St. Louis. This would rank a lot higher if they'd been a little tighter. Great venue, great sound, good setlist ("In My Tree", "Alone", "Immortality", "All or None"...all excellent) but a few too many covers for my taste.
7. 6/18/2003 - Chicago. This was such a disappointing show, but it was 2003 so it can't be last. Ed was sick as a dog and they couldn't do a lot of high-energy songs, but at least it gave them the opportunity to play "Light Years". This is still the only time I've heard "Release". It was really cool to hear "Arc". The encores were a huge let down, though. I think we would have gotten a show like Alpine Valley (which I couldn't afford to go to) if Ed had been healthy.
8. 10/31/2009 - Philadelphia. I didn't want to rank this last but...it kind of has to be. For too many reasons.

Now you.

It's crazy that Portland 13 is ranked higher than your Spectrum show. Crazy.

4. 6/14/08 - Bonnaroo - The experience, plus Who You Are and full WMA
5. 6/27/98 - East Troy, WI - 2nd night of Alpine Valley campout. 1st shows with Matt, he blew me away with the end of Immortality to close the 1st set
6. 7/19/13 - Chicago, IL - Wrigley - Obviously unique, but a great memory
7. 8/24/09 - Chicago, IL - United Ctr - One of my fav setlists of all time
8. 7/23/06 - Gorge II - Dirty Frank!
9. 10/3/14 - St. Louis - Much better than '13 shows. I was surprised and impressed
10. 4/18/03 - Nashville, TN - Beautiful day, outdoor ampitheatre, 3rd row ctr. Lots of Binaural + my only Bushleaguer

When I was there live, I thought it was an epic show. After it settled and I heard the boot, I realized it was just very good. I remember after they played Corduroy thinking this reminds me of the boots I've heard of special shows.

Top 3-4 (out of 24) so far.

Key Arena 1996. My first PJ show. On the rail in front of Mike the whole time. Amazing.

The Gorge 2005. I have never been so excited going in to a PJ show. It's a crime they haven't played the Gorge more often in their career. I only wish I was a little older to have been able to see Lollapalooza, Drop In The Park, Dave A., etc.

Tie. The Showbox 2002 (night 1) and 2004. Seeing them in a tiny all-GA venue was pretty damn cool.

Not to nitpick but Dirty Frank was played at the first Gorge show (your no. 1).

I've seen the band five times, I don't think I can accurately rank them except to say the first Adelaide show in 2006 was easily the best and the 2014 Adelaide show was the worst by a long shot. I'm also very glad I saw the band at least once with Jack (Adelaide 1998).

Gorge 2 (2005) was dominant, bro. You missed out.

Agreed. Glad I got to see at least one other drummer besides Matt.

1. 9/5/00 - great energy, setlist and show
2. 6/23/06 -went with 8 friends, show was awesome, PJ friends non PJ fan friends had a great time.
3. 10/1/14 - just thought the band sounded great, terrific crowd.
4. 10/11/13 - another great crowd, band was in town 5 days, rehearsed and sounded good. Having great seats helped.
5. 9/18/98 - night before what became vault 3, great show on a great tour.
6. 8/25/98 - see above comment
7. 9/24/96- 1st time seeing band in 4 years, great time with friends, great energy from band.
8. 9/28/96 - night before epic Randall's island show, nearly got trampled in pit, lot of rain.
9. 10/12/13 - not as good as Pgh the night before, didn't have good seats, still like the show.
10. 4/26/03 - was never wild about this setlist, but the boot sounds real good.
11. 10/28/09 - definitely the weakest show I've seen from them, sloppy, and they kept tabs on the Phillies(fuck them) WS game.
12. 8/16/92 - I'd rank this ahead of Philly if a) I could remember it , I was 21 and shitfaced, and 2) it wasn't a 45 minute or so set.

Top Category

Leeds 2014 - definitely number one. Crazy setlist, right up close in GA, just didn't want the night to end. My 14th show, and 13 new songs
Milton Keynes 2014 - just below number one. A great day out with some really good friends having their first show and loving it. Chloe/Crown > Betterman > Jeremy in the pit is a 20 minutes that I'll always remember.
London 2010 - nothing overly special about the setlist but a great outdoor show. Nothingman and Go really stood out that evening. GTF opener with a friend seeing his favourite band for the first time was special
Amsterdam II 2012 - THAT setlist
Prague 2012 - Great venue, beautiful city, 10C only at the front of the floor so plenty of space in front of Mike. The band were super into it and heard a few songs I'd been waiting for (Garden, Half Full, I Am Mine, Setting Forth)

Really good

Berlin II 2012 - Oceans into Breakerfall to open
Berlin 2010 - Wuhlheide, 10th anniversary of Roskilde. It felt very special to be in the crowd that evening.
London 2009 - Was so happy to hear Release, Corduroy, Betterman for the first time. Hearing a song's first live outing was a nice novelty (admittedly it was Supersonic, but still)
London 2007 - first show, 10c only floor and a great set pre-backspacer.
Belfast 2010 - very underrated show.

Solid

Berlin I 2012 - In My Tree and Hard to Imagine were the highlights, but nothing much else to write home about it.
Manchester 2009 - was quite ill during this show and spent the first encore throwing up, which didn't help
Dublin 2010 - really dead crowd
Amsterdam I 2012 - not bad, but the second show overshadowed it by a long way

Manchester I 2012 - the only show I didn't enjoy. First night of the tour and it felt completely phoned in. The setlist pretty average setlist (not as bad as I recall having just checked it out) and the venue is really poor. They can do so much better in the UK than to play there

You're the first person I've seen to have attended the Cardiff show! How did you find it? That's quite a different location to the rest of the shows you listed

My brother was living in Cardiff at the time and got the tickets for me. I also saw the Manchester show two nights before. Half of my family lives in the UK or Ireland.

I hated that Spectrum show. I hated the crowd, I hated the setlist, I hated how drunk Ed was and I hated the city. I had a lot more fun at the Portland show last fall than I had at the Spectrum, and with the added benefit that I could take the bus home and be back by midnight without legions of drunken assholes from New Jersey hailing cabs while wandering out into traffic. And I liked the setlist better. And Ed sounded a hell of a lot better, which is almost inexplicable.
