2014 Official Bootlegs

Fri March 28, 2014 10:10 am

Well, well.

If the first three songs are any indication, it sounds as though PEARL JAM decided to finally turn up in Auckland.

Release > Go > Corduroy

And the most predictable post on RM occurred. Spenno likes an Australian portion of a tour over the US portion. And in record time, only 3 songs this time.

spenno isn't a homer, his live assessments are honest

Yea I pretty much take what spenno says about the shows as the gospel.

I just have a feeling he may have posted too soon, is all.

While his assessments are consistent within his criteria, he is the most geographical biased person in the Live sub forum. I would have bet my life that his post would happen. I thought it would take at least 1 full concert though.

Look on the bright side, PJs back! :haha:

Spenno, please list some shitty Australian Pearl Jam shows.

That still won't make my post false.

Oh, the rest of the show could very well be abysmal; those three opening songs, however, kicked out the jams.

I'll report back soon.

I can't help that some of Pearl Jam's best shows on the 2006 and 2009 tours happened in Australia.

As much as anything, it's by virtue of the fact that both of those series of shows came after they'd already been touring for a while and had been suitably "warmed up".

I'm hardly the only one who shares that opinion about those shows.

But I thought my geographical bias was the problem...

Anyway, how about 2003? I think that's one of the weakest run of shows in the official bootleg era. They really didn't hit much of a groove until they got to the US that year.

Look what a powerful affect my geographic bias had on my opinion when the band were right in front of me a few months back! You don't get geographically closer than that!

Spoiler: show

Has any noticed a trend of tighter, better shows happening on the coast vs inland? Maybe it's the band that have geographical tendencies.

I do think the band approach shows in the US differently than they do shows in Europe, South America, Australia, New Zealand, etc - I feel as though they don't play to (what they imagine) the hardcore fans want as much in the latter.

Absolutely agree, there's much less meandering around the catalog outside of the US.

re: Auckland

It's not just performance either (though it's mainly performance), it's also the pacing of the sets. Hearing the band open with a very respectable version of Release and then slam straight into great renditions of Go and Corduroy was refreshing after hearing all those stretches at the beginning of the US shows where they opened with a number of slower songs in a row. Part of my excitement was simply that it finally felt like I was listening to a Pearl Jam show; I guess I'm something of a Pearl Jam traditionalist in that sense.

Update: This is also an exemplary version of Mind Your Manners

Update II: Brain of J. has a number of wonky spots but STONE'S SOLO. I repeat, STONE'S SOLO.
