Post subject:  Pearl Jam - Cinderellas 2013 (a compilation)

The 2013 Lightning Bolt tour of the USA saw Pearl Jam delve deep into their back catalogue to revive many songs that had not been played in years. Such rarities are dubbed 'Cinderellas' in fantasy league competitions due to their 'out of nowhere' underdog quality. Unlike some more moderately played tracks that the band will try to 'wing' on any given night (Life Wasted I'm looking in your direction), these rarities required the band to actually REHEARSE them and it shows - there are some strong renditions here that make for a really enjoyable listen (the fact that Ed still plays many of these at his solo shows certainly helps).

This was one of the most challenging compilations I've ever made, the sequencing was particularly difficult due to the lack of early rockers and other sign-post songs that give a set some structure. Many of these songs were played in the low-key first encore, so there are more slower acoustic numbers than usual, but I think this captures Pearl Jam playing to their post-2000 strengths (nearly all of these songs are from their later albums). There are also a few seldom/never played covers, including a couple of Lou Reed songs in tribute to his recent passing.

PM me for more info

Thanks for taking the time to put this together, Brad. Listened to it last night--as is typical of your comps, the flow is impeccable, the transitions are seamless, and the selections are choice. Having grown accustomed to the ramshackle lack of precision of 2008-2011 (I took a pass on the 2012 boots--a man can only take so much), the tightness of the band on this disc defied my expectations. But man--these are the first recordings from the 2013 tour I've listened to (apart from a couple mp3's from the first show), and Eddie's voice really is a sad thing to behold. So much of what made that voice such a remarkable instrument has just been lost to the years, or cigarettes, or whatever else--that once crystal clear, commanding baritone, now a wavering, breathy warble that he renders by way of a series of awkward vocal tics to keep it from going off-key. There were a few moments during "Thin Air" where I found myself feeling legitimately sad, remembering how beautifully poignant that song sounded just thirteen years ago, and realizing that those days are probably gone forever.

Perhaps surprisingly, I thought the highlight of the disc was the quickie cover of "After Hours." It reminded me of his reading of "Dream a Little Dream" on the ukulele album--dusky, jazzy, muted, living very much up to its title. Somehow this proves a remarkably effective setting for Eddie's current limitations--he doesn't have to push himself too hard, allowing the wear in his voice to reflect wisdom and experience rather than ineptitude, and the Tin Pan Alley-esque chord structure is far enough removed from PJ's typical bag to feel fresh. Hearing the full band trying to work themselves into "Let Me Sleep" was endearing too; it's rare Pearl Jam plays shows into December, I actually felt a little residual Christmas magic listening to it. :)

Thanks again for this, it was an enjoyable listen.

13 years is a long time especially when it comes to someone's physical state, in this case someone's voice.

Thanks for the feedback guys

KD - could not agree with you more re: Ed's voice. It's such a shame, as the tightness of the band and certainly the sound quality of the bootlegs is probably the best it's ever been :(

Spot on. I got annoyed with Thin Air. He is dragging syllables out to the point of being out of time.

The band sounds absolutely incredible on Fatal but again Ed drags it down with his Vocal tics. Its really sad and frustrating :(

Just giving this a listen now and I have to say, I love the sound of these bootlegs. It's really too bad that Ed sounds as bad as he does because I think the band sounds really good still. Thanks again for all your hard work Brad.

Great work, as always Brad. This is a really nice mix of songs.

I agree with the positives and negatives from previous posters. One very unexpected highlight was Gone. The use of an acoustic in this one really made it a much better listen. Removes a lot of the dreary plod from the full electric version.
