I love Gods' Dice so much. Matt in 2000 drummed Animal better than any other drummer.

Yeah, I don't know what to tell anyone who doesn't love Chicago '00. After the shorter, disappointing East Troy set due to the extreme cold it really sounds like the band is super happy to be back inside a warm room. The main set goes around 22 songs which was absolutely unheard of at the time, and they nailed pretty much every song.

I agree that the 2000 bootlegs do sound a tad cold and... tinny? But the band played out of their skins that night, and the crowd was there with them the whole way. If this isn't one of the greatest shows they played that year, I don't know what is.

P.S. I always had a soft spot for the Halloween show in San Francisco. Back when I first bought the CD in 2002, I played the shit out of it on my super cool discman. Disc 2 especially... Ed is in a chatty, funny mood and the songs sound great. The 'Black' solo is particularly lovely, too.

The band also come out for one of the encores dressed as the Village People and Ed has a dance with a guy in a Bush mask during 'Do The Evolution' :haha:

I've gutted my house of about 150 PJ bootlegs over the past couple years, mostly audience recordings I downloaded back when downloading stuff was new and exciting. After MJD's hagiography of that "Even Flow" clip I found myself compelled to pull out one of the few 1991-92 audience tapes that survived the cut:

07/17/91 - Wetlands Preserve: New York, NY [60m]
set: Wash, Once, Even Flow, Alive, State of Love and Trust, Black, Why Go, Garden, Porch, Alone, Breath
notes: Matt Chamberlain on drums. Relaxed, fun performance. 'State of Love and Trust' is a bit different version.

One of the first audience tapes I ever heard (which is a big part of why it survived the purge despite it not being a particularly special show). In addition to the usual live bootleg CD's, my local record store sold a lot of 90-minute Maxells with handwritten covers that were a bit more agreeable to the cash-strapped; I had this show and Summerfest '95 on these cassettes, in addition to a handful of CD's. It's enjoyable hearing the songs in these fledgling stages; "Ten" wasn't even out yet, and you can already hear the band kind of recalibrating on a few songs to accommodate Chamberlain's style (he'd only played a handful of shows with them at this point). Eddie also hadn't really embraced that low register in full yet -- his voice is kind of a weird mix of hurr-durr Eddie, Roger Daltrey, and the funk-rock surfer dude he was in his pre-PJ days.

Parting Ways is "not very good live," eh? So many phenomenal versions from 2000. Try the ones from Lubbock, Detroit, San Diego, Fresno and... actually, fuck it. Just stick with Alive, Even Flow, and Black, mikejasond.

Particularly the versions that Stone doesn't play on.

Those aren't even the best live songs.

The best live song is Better Man

No way, man! Weirdly, I think Rearviewmirror is their best live song if you're there in the arena. I always skip it on the bootlegs because Ed's lack of commitment to the vocals drives me nuts, but when I'm actually there is tears the roof of the place.

I've never heard a louder roar after a song than after RVM in Manchester in 2012. They fucking slayed it that night.

Yeah "best song live" is tricky because it could be one thing on a boot you just listen to, but something different if you are at the shows. When I am at a show, RVM, Porch, Go, DTE, and Corduroy (minus call and response) all seem to be the best, because of the atmosphere they create with the crowd. That atmosphere isn't captured on the boots though.

10.16.14 Detroit MI on Sirius XM today.

I feel like the 2014 shows Ive heard were kinda...surprisingly good?

I sort of like shows from off years where they don't have to promote an album.

Release to open

Eddie really has to stop the hees! I know that he has an excuse on Release, as its in the song legitimately but UGH ITS SO BAD. Otherwise he sounds very good

Wow

Release -> Oceans

Re: Which bootleg are you listening to?

Release -> Oceans -> Nothingman.

So still doing the slow start thing from the 2013 tour. In the building I loved that but then they would ruin it by always doing MYM and LB. I hope in 2014 they don't have those songs in the first 6

Re: Which bootleg are you listening to?

Mon October 16, 2017 6:34 pm

awwwwwww yeah. Go got the MYM spot. MUCH BETTER!

Re: Which bootleg are you listening to?

Re: Which bootleg are you listening to?

Mon October 16, 2017 6:40 pm

Release
Oceans
Nothingman
Go
MYM
Corduroy

Pretty crazy setlist so far

Into LB. This is seeming a lot like a Lightning Bolt tour show :(

Re: Which bootleg are you listening to?

Mon October 16, 2017 7:01 pm

I would give anything for them to try Even Flow at the original tempo once

Re: Which bootleg are you listening to?

Mon October 16, 2017 7:14 pm

Release
Oceans
Nothingman
Go
MYM
Corduroy
Lightning Bolt
Amongst the Waves
Even Flow
Light Years
Got Some

The first half was definitely the best so far. I don't really like Got Some in this position that much.

Modern dissident is so blah to me. It seems too easy like they're snoozing through it
