The board's server will undergo upgrade maintenance tonight, Nov 5, 2014, beginning approximately around 10 PM ET. Prepare for some possible down time during this process.
This is a good example of how down-tuning can make a song sound completely bland.
No it's not.
WHEN WILL THEY PLAY GETAWAY WHEN WILL THEY PLAY GETAWAY WHEN WILL THEY PLAY GETAWAY WHEN WILL THEY PLAY GETAWAY WHEN WILL THEY PLAY GETAWAY WHEN WILL THEY PLAY GETAWAY WHEN WILL THEY PLAY GETAWAY THEY PLAYED GETAWAY IT IS BLAND.
God forbid Pearl Jam fans ever admit to actually liking Pearl Jam when Pearl Jam does something Pearl Jam wants to do. Song rocks. The album rocks. These sets have been incredible and they sound like they're still in their 30's.
Please find a single post of mine where I was clamoring for the band to play "Getaway". I'll be here waiting.

2nd to Last Show Syndrome, I told you.
Is this a thing now? During the last big east coast run in 2010, the last show was better than the second to last. But what's interesting is that in this run, I liked the first of the back-to-back shows better than the second (WOR1, BK1, PHL1). In the past it's usually been a safe bet that the second night was more interesting than the first but maybe with age they just don't have the energy for it.
Back on topic. Last nights show looks pretty good on paper, so if the crowd sucked that's too bad. Maybe the crowd had a hangover from C-ville.
I would say the idea that the second show was always better/more interesting was valid up through 1998 but since 2000 that has not really held true at all. And 2nd to last syndrome has held true in the past with this band...people shot their wad over State College in 2003 but the Buffalo show the night before absolutely destroys it.

You can tell how blah it is from that shitty youtube clip or do are you listening to a better source?
I understand where lowercasejames is coming from. The negativity has lessened a bit on this board over the last 3 weeks, but when Pearl Jam is in the middle of their best tour in years for the best album in years, it's a little tough to swallow, even in diminished amounts.

Can you think of a bad example? I can't.
*sigh*
Stoopid band.

I've had plenty of positive things to say about the sets, even within this very thread. If saying that the downtuned version of "Getaway" sounds bland is enough to set you off, you need to take a good hard look at your fandom.

I'm not set off friend. I was saying that the new guy with 11 posts probably isn't used to the style here if he has typically read the pit.

You rule.
theplatypus has really been in mode lately.
i'm guessing he took a good hard look at his fandom and realized some life lessons, resulting in a superiority complex not seen since Brendan O'Brien.

Interesting. I never noticed but I'll be sure to keep it in mind should I ever travel to PJ shows again.
And the Penn State show thing has always been a question of length vs girth. That show was long, but not all that satisfying.
That YouTube of Getaway was maybe the only time I actually noticed a down-tuning in a negative way w/o someone pointing it out. Normally I could care less, but to my ears it took away from the energy of that particular song. Oh well.

That clip of Getaway is a horrible representation of how it sounded there. It rocked. It has to be played more often.
The boot may end up sucking, but I loved the hell out of Getaway. When Harmless asked how Sirens was, I realized I couldn't remember how the performance was, partly because of how much I dug Getaway.
I think the crowd may have been a consequence of PJ's not playing the southeast. Just from informal conversations from people around me, it felt like the bulk of the crowd were folks who were seeing them live for the first time, and more in a "huge band comes to town for the first time in years, I gotta go see them" context than the "I fell in love with PJ after Binaural and this is my first chance to see them live" context. This crowd probably would have loved a Music Midtown setlist (though I'd have been bummed). The guy to my left was really enjoying the show, but asked me the song title of GTF after they played it. The woman standing behind me was screaming her lungs out on DTE, Even Flow, and Daughter... and not much else. But she was really getting into it. (Weirdly, I was Row A behind the pit, and I knew we were all sitting in front of a ton of 10C'ers.)
Losing Wash was a bummer, but I don't think it would have worked there. Apart from the acoustic set, this was a high-energy set (even "Immortality" was high energy), and I think Wash would have just been confusing. However, the setlist posted on the Pit said "Wash/Leash" - I'm not sure how I feel about Leash in 2013, but I would have loved to have seen that, and I think the crowd would have eaten it up.
I really enjoyed this show. I had waffled on going (and let Ticketmaster make the decision), but I'm really really glad that I did. Even if I didn't get home until after 3am.

It's shocking, but I don't think there was a bad show the whole leg. There were some I thought were better amongst the bunch I saw, but only 1 I didn't like and it got such raves from others, I was probably just hitting my PJ limit at hat point.
