"Evenflow" sounds better tuned down I think
i seem to recall the early live versions being very low and slow

It seems perverse to tune down those songs (Better Man and Corduroy too), while more vocally demanding songs like Garden and Jeremy are still in standard.

Yeah, I don’t think it suffers too badly.
I don’t think tuning down is inherently a bad idea (as I said in this thread earlier), it’s just not been very successful for these guys when they’ve attempted it before.

I’m sure it’s a fucking bitch to tune that 12-string bass down a half-step.

Watching a stream of the Hamilton show tonight, sounded like the whole show was played a full step down, so D tuning sure seems to be the norm now. So jarring to hear songs like Corduroy and Alive in a different key than you've heard it your entire life until now.
I guess Boom has to rewrite his chord charts for each song but at least he doesn't have to get near all those black keys that must scare him.

i think down-tuning is probably better than ed ruining his voice or sounding completely off. i wonder if it will be more noticeable in concert, i don't think it's every really stuck out to me when seeing a show.

I was at the 1st night in Hyde Park and I'm sure he played a bass with at least 8 strings before then as well, so was convinced they played Why Go (my other gig was 2010 which could be why) before I heard the boot.
The only 2 I notice with my ears is Crazy Mary (I always thought it was in B but live it sounds like A) and WMA. Mostly I don't mind, a guitar can easily drift half a step away without the owner even noticing (I'm not talking professionals or people in bands, where a guitar needs to be in tune with other instruments). I don't know how I feel though, I mean maybe just accomodate the tuning by singing slightly differently instead (in other words not all the same notes, but something that still works)?
