Are you going tonight, Mickey? Did they finally invent dissertations that write themselves?

Committee said I can take the rest of the year off baybee

Your professors told you to take some time off? Do you fucking go to Brown now or what?

Hey, Mickey, this was a good post and I hope you saw it.

I don't get it

Alright, nevermind.

No explain it to me right now

Just that going to Brown is a punchline. I thought it was pretty simple. Tried for the combination Ivy/Rhode Island slam, but I guess it doesn't have that reputation anymore.

Maybe it wasn't such a good post after all.

the first four songs really built the energy up perfectly early in the set. EV sounded great on 'wash' and "HTI'. when 'animal' kicked in i pretty much lost it. it was like an animal being released from a cage, the band just went full throttle into everything. i think 'deep' scared my wife lol. ed and matt were having fun jamming on 'interstellar overdrive', it seemed to go on longer than normal with other guitars chiming in. i thought the new stuff sounded great. i was hoping for DOTC, but i'm not going to complain about anything from last night. 'mfc' and 'not for you' were nice surprises. 'porch' is one of my favorite songs ever, and during the jam McCready came over to us and almost let me touch his guitar. it's probably how catholics feel when they get close to the pope lol.

the encore was incredible. part of it was expecting 3 songs, the other part was the songs they chose. "state" and "breath" back to back was pretty special. i think 'breath' was requested by someone who won a lottery through a donation, EV brought them on stage. great work on their part with this setlist lol. when 'crazy mary' started i said out loud 'holy shit, they are still going'. i just kept expecting 'alive' song after song. when 'leash' kicked in the pit went nuts. it's not my favorite song, but it was a pretty cool experience. they could have followed 'alive' up with anything, but 'free world' made sense. EV was running around tossing out tambourines, dude next to me got one. mccready was throwing handfuls of guitar picks, he must have thrown out over 100. perfect ending to an amazing night.

i've seen these guys a lot, including every show in this building but one. this is as good as almost any show i've ever seen. i'm not big into rarities, but a show with 'wash', 'HTI', 'state' and 'breath'...i mean what year is it? they played most of these songs at the show at Dobbs on South St. ed mentioned last night in 91. they sounded just as good, if not better last night, then they did in 1991. you could tell they also really fed off the crowds energy. some of us haven't seen these guys in 6 years, so the energy was palpable. they are in their 3rd decade as a band and are doing really special things. i'm glad to be a part of it.

In all seriousness though I think the part I really identified with in Stip's write-up was the bit about not taking this experience for granted, and the role the pandemic played in that. On the opposite side of the spectrum, I'd never seen Pearl Jam before. They weren't really touring around me when I was super into them, and then later it didn't seem worth the time and money for a band whose last two records I found basically unlistenable. I had a chance to go to the 2015 show in La Plata and skipped it due to the inconvenience of not having anyone to go with. I guess I felt like maybe I'd see them sometime down the road when it lined up, and after the past two years it no longer felt possible to indulge in that kind of "oh, one day..." thinking. I don't think I'm going to start blasting Backspacer anytime soon but I'm glad I went, it was fun as hell. And hearing all the songs that used to inspire big feelings in me in my late teenage years, now on the precipice of fatherhood, was quite an emotional experience.

if you are about to have a kid, congratulations. Backspacer - Lightning Bolt - Gigaton are definitely records written by fathers, and there are things that you may appreciate more or think about differently once that happens.

Or not. But it might happen

IIRC "Breath" was the specific request of some guy who won a fan club raffle (or maybe made the biggest donation? unclear), and who also might have been allowed to make some other picks on the setlist--perhaps that's why it was so heavy on the early stuff. He and his kid came out and waved.

"Alive" was introduced with a story about a firefighter who didn't come home on 9/11 and how his brother is fighting for health care for the surviving first responders, the brother came out and waved and they had some hockey jerseys from (I think?) a first responders hockey team. The dead guy's name was Frank and Eddie said something like "gonna play it loud so you can hear it wherever you are" and for a second I was like "oh my god they're gonna play Dirty Frank," which in retrospect would have been a weird way to honor this guy.

Leash was prefaced by a sign coming out of the pit that said "Pearl Jam show #108, Play Leash," Eddie's banter described above.

I think between Why Go and Porch Eddie gave a long speech about freedom being on the ballot this November, most importantly the freedom to choose, bemoaning the Dobbs decision, etc., which pissed off the guy behind us who was, I guess, somehow unaware that Pearl Jam are pro-choice liberals.

There was some banter about Dr. J and how big his hands are at some point.
