I don't know much about the Dead, I admit.

I guess they're either straight soundboard recordings or they had their own dedicated recording truck set-up early on, which wasn't something Pearl Jam could afford in the early days?

cutuphalfdead wrote:what are you guys talking about? was this in an email i deleted without reading?

It's in the newsletter, a detailed history of how they've recorded their shows (probably getting sick of dorks complaining of missing songs on Vault releases).

I'm not sure of the specifics of the Dead's setup but many of their recordings are two-track tape, and many others are straight soundboards. Most of their tapes sound clean but the mixes vary wildly.

finally listening to this one - as an official release - and I have to say that Corduroy is at its best when played with Jack. that is all.

Just listened to it and it is indeed a damn fine version. Jack's drumming, and Mike's work at the end channelling Neil Young, are both pretty dope.

is there a trick to downloading these vault shows without relying on some shitty java app that no browser supports?

No. Those are mostly 2-track reels, and they did lose quite a few of them. There are also chunks of time in their early days that were not taped at all. They had several soundpeople who were compulsive tapers, and that's how that all came to be. They didn't even start maintaining a live vault until the 90's...tapes were scattered all over the place...in storage lockers, barns, houseboats, etc...

i have a feeling half of the lost Dead recordings went something like:

Taper: "Hey man, we got that show on tape. Sounded great."
Garcia: "Fantastic! Lemme hear."
Taper: ".................................................Fuck. I forgot to press 'record'."

Your image kinda looks like this box + the stencil
They make a shorter box too, but I can't find it.

Thans to P. Clarke - I am spinning this right now.

Ed's voice is so beautiful ragged. Good lord.

Also, they do a great job on these vault releases. One thing they could add to it would be maybe a forward or a letter on the inside cover from one of the band members or someone who was there reminiscing and talking about the show.

Great to have this in such good quality now.

I dont recall if a conversation was had on the quality but i personally think its a massive upgrade from the FM/soundboard version that I paid $80 for in 1996. The nuances really pop; especially EV's voice and Aments Bass.

That being said ....

right choice or wrong choice to dump the encore?
