The board's server will undergo upgrade maintenance tonight, Nov 5, 2014, beginning approximately around 10 PM ET. Prepare for some possible down time during this process.
There are a few other things that make me wonder as well. Elements that are more prominent in the mix, where I can't tell if it's just the mastering not smashing them to bits or if they were adjusted.
There's definitely a moment in You Are where Ed was noticeably pitchy, and now is not. So either somebody ducked some frequencies, or autotune was light-touch applied.
Imagine getting the masters back for approval of the originally-released version and thinking "yeah, this is fine".
Did they listen to it tho
A friend of mine asked Eddie why their albums since S/T have been so compressed, and the question totally confused him. He claimed to not know what it even means. So my guess is that it doesn't make a difference whether he listens to it or not.
It feels like the original mastering was calculatedly intended to deprive them of anything that elevated them.
I'm feeling a lot of appreciation for it right now, but some of that might be a blend of "oh I forgot this record" and the novelty of new details. It's a much better record either way. There's more theater to the performances than I remember.
Could you side-by-side Sleight of Hand, with headphones?
I don't remember these things well enough to know what I don't remember well enough., vs what's actually changed.
I quickly compared the first 30 seconds of each and they sounded pretty much identical to me.
Ok.
It might be my headphones. The guitar in the verse felt lower in the mix and eq'd brighter than I remembered, but I've never listened to it since I bought these.
Looking back, btw, it appears the No Code and Yield remasters hit Spotify and iTunes (Mastered for iTunes stamped and all) before any vinyl shipped. I came across those in July, and the reviews for the turntable releases here start popping up over a month later.
