I think I've been unfair to this song lately. I'll give it a 3. Still an example of the miss side of the mid tempo anthem that has been so hit or miss since vitalogy

To me this is a perfect example of how dynamics can make or break a song. This builds up and up in such a relentless manner, yet it is so subtle you barely notice. Matt is instrumental in this, providing one of his best PJ perfomances IMO (great fills, great rhythms). The organs provide an awesome back-drop too, great tones heard here. Straight after that first chorus, feels like it's going to drop off but then BOOM comes back into a verse as uplifting as the last.

I dunno I really wanted to do a big analysis of this track but it's too hard to put into words. I do think this is one of the most underrated PJ songs though, simple yet stunning, totally captivating. One of Eddie's best performances.

I'm with you fishbob.

It wasn't the time for anthems I don't think. And I don't think it's trying to be one and failing.
It's a cry in the dark I think. I need to know you love me. I need to know you're there.
Who he's singing it to, I dunno. Im not surehe does. But I love it for that

The reason why this song is so good is because it comes from a place of true vulnerability, which makes it so much more sincere

I'm tempted to say this was PJ's most recent 5 star song, but that would be a bold statement.

We could hear them soundcheck it at the Berlin show which was ten years to the day since Roskilde. Ed stopped singing a few times. You could hear he was breaking up.
They didn't play it that night.

I listened to this for the first time in ages yesterday and was suprised by how much I didnt hate. The music itself is really great, and oh my god how I wish yellow moon was on riot act, it sounds fucking great.

Its kinda meandery and seems like it doesnt know what its doing, which I dont mind. Still loses points for ' all you need is love love love' and every utterance of the phrase 'love boat captain' and I dislike the intro/outro.

This part is great though

Is this just another phase
Of earthquakes making waves
Trying to shake the cancer off
Oh, stupid human beings
Once you hold the hand of love
It's all surmountable

Hold me and make it the truth
That when all is lost there'll be you
Cuz to the universe, I don't mean a thing
And there is just one word I still believe And it's love...

I think this is a very good song but the song title hurts it. We recently spent a good amount of time debating the song titles to LB. We commented how much more excited we were becasue the titles sounded "cooler".

"Love Boat Captain" is a bad song title that effcts how we end up enjoying the song.

How much better would this song feel if it was called simply "Love"

You're really going to let a songs name disturb your view of the song?

Really?

My thoughts exactly. This is the second time I've seen someone express their upset at the name of LBC in the past few days on here, and I don't understand:

What it is that's so wrong with the title "Love Boat Captain?"

What bearing can/does a name have on how much one likes a song anyway?

Some of the best songs ever have ridiculous titles.
I refer you as a starting point to almost the entire Beatles catalogue.

its not logical. I can't explain it fully but the name of a song does have an effect. Let me make this clear... I sitll enjoy the song but there is just somehting about that title that annoys me.

If Ghost had been titled Soap Makes You Taller instead, I'd still love the song....but, my god, I'd never not be able to think of it without WTFing.

Any other time I think they would have named it that.

But this was the roskilde record. There was need gonna be even the smallest amount if humour involved in any way. And there really isn't.

This is one of the very few PJ songs that I can't stand. It's embarrassing. I cringe when I hear these awful, awful lyrics.

Man, this song is the perfect example of a song that can be covered in cheese wizz lyrics and still be fucking great.
