Soldier of Love is such a good cover. I love Ed´s take....i guess my favorite version is Bridge 99 but damn that 98 version in the Last Kiss single is damn fine too.

VS (and the songs from that era) showcased the biggest vocal style shift for Eddie, more than any other album in their catalogue. And in a lot of ways, the album contains every one of his future vocal styles**, all in one package.

Some of their more age appropriate stuff has been collectively shit on by the board (The End, Just Breathe, Sirens, etc.), but I think they can full explore those themes with better music.

I think the problem with all of those is mostly Eddie's voice

Why does "age appropriate" equal sappy ballads in your mind?

I would include My Father's Son and Force of Nature, as well as others. I was just naming a few.

I don't really get the "Ed solo songs" thing. A lot of bands have songs that are more or less just solo performances by a single member. And it's not like Ed is prolifically cranking out solo albums or anything.
Something like "Future Days" isn't misplaced; it just stinks.

Correct.
Small Town is essentially an Ed solo tune, but no one here considers it one.
"Future Days" and "The End" are songs that: 1- only feature Ed 2- were released after Ed had started his solo career 3- don't really sound like Pearl Jam songs 4- are stylistically similar to songs Ed has released in his solo career
I think that's what Spenno means when he talks about them being Ed solo songs. Right or wrong, songs like "Small Town", "Man of the Hour", "Thumbing My Way", etc don't meet all the above criteria.
