I really have no idea what the lyrics are to most Pearl Jam songs.

Do we know if he's talking about actual whiskers, or if there's a cat named Whiskers that's sitting in the sink?

Mike is so great.

Listening to the Stooges tribute show they did with Duff and Mark arm etc....

His tone is so dirty, nasty, he's so precise and passionate and wild. He shines in this environment.

However, when he is with pearl jam, his tone is weak, tinny, and not as immediate. WTF pj.

PJ's guitar tones really do suck ass lately

There a few songs on the last two records that are thoroughly ruined by Mike's playing for me, notably Getaway and Gonna See My Friend both of which I think I could enjoy a lot more were it not for what Mike chooses to play. Got Some too, that main melodic line he plays is so drab.

Its really upsetting.

He sounds so great here. Live and in studio they are so lacked. Though, i am sure studio is due to the production of BOB.

The song "Holes in the Road" from Tres Mtn that features McCready is perfectly filthy. He hasn't captured something like that with pj in forever.

Have you guys listened to the official recording of this stooges tribute? His tone is everything it should be.

I may be wrong but I feel as though he really struggles to find space in the kind of music they're writing now to add something valuable with his parts.

It feels like his playing sits on top rather than forming an integral part of the song, as though when they're recording it's like "oh, time for Mike to add something" and he just bashes out some rote, hacky "rock" guitar over the top and everyone agrees it's good enough.

No, but now I want to check it out.

I agree. Though i think the same thing could be said for all of them. That is all just them playing it safe and doing al the know and not pushing each other.

His playing during this show reminds me of his playing during Mad Season. His mid 90's drug and alcohol infused uncaged playing.

He was on fire during that show. He was still hamming it up like he does with all his pointing and jumping, but he was ripping it. He's good in that style. He's good in classic rock style too, but he really finds a special place in the punky rock arena

He and Barrett Martin seem to play off each other really well.

That reminds me that the band's cover of The Kinks' Better Things is my favourite studio recording of theirs in recent years as it was recorded by Brett Eliason (long time bootleg mixer and live FOH mixer 1991-2000) and is entirely free of Brendan's spit and polish.

 I just looked this up. It sounds like a different band! This is what an aged, pop-leaning PJ could sound like and still be interesting! What the fuck! BOB needs to go right now!
