I also think the "Ed solo career" idea is overrated. He released a soundtrack and an album entirely comprised of songs on ukulele. It's not like he put out a standalone album of songs like "Just Breathe" or "The End" that were without other context.
If he writes a song like that specifically for a movie or something, it can slot in on a soundtrack. Otherwise, he's comfortable recording it with Pearl Jam.
I suspect if he didn't do so as much solo touring there would be much less chatter about him having a "solo career."
