I'm not sure Insignificance would have done well at radio at all; it's too herky-jerky. I'm not sure Binaural had a hit on it (I don't think something like Sad would have been a hit either, for that matter). They were writing stuff that was catchy, but I'm not sure what they were writing was palatable for mainstream rock radio at the time.

I agree. How awesome would it have been to release "Sad" as the single and keep it off Binaural? I don't think that practice has been done since the 60's. Like when the Beatles would release "Paperback Writer" but it wasn't on a proper US release (until Past Masters), it was just a single not part of an album.

I hear this a lot on this board but for the life of me I don't know on what planet Sad would have ever been considered a "hit."

I mean, it's well-written but not all that catchy and it never really leaves its comfort zone to grab you by the throat. And, you know, the refrain is, "It's sad."

All of this to say, it's a nice b-side.

Maybe. Perhaps. Possibly. Could be.

I don't know if it would be a hit. I'd bet it would get more love than NAIS got. Still, I think it would have been cool for them to release a "b-side" as an "a-side" first single. It would have fit their style at the time, and harken back to the 60's when it was common to have hit singles off of the albums.

I heard they were gonna skip the next 6 singles and just send one big box set in 2022.

I remember a while back... I can't remember if it was during the press run for Backspacer or Avocado. I'm thinking Backspacer. But Ed was talking about how he figured out his vocal melodies, and how he pictures the music as a wave and his vocal melodies ride along it (of course he made that comparison). But, it was right around this time that I started disliking a lot of Ed's deliveries, not including his vocal ticks. This method is evident throughout Backspacer and LB, and I don't think it's working well for him, or the band overall. It's not that on previous albums his vocal melody was in direct conflict with the instruments. He was able to create his own instrument that fit within the construct of the song. Sometimes soothingly, sometimes tensely. But he doesn't seem to do this very much anymore, and I think the songs suffer from it.
