Oh man, this sounds like legitimately fun homework. Is there a deadline on submissions?

I was thinking of keeping nominations for Ten open until the end of this week (21 Jan) and then start to decide on versions from there...

Late to the party on this, can I give mine or are we only doing certain albums at this point?

Feel free to submit your suggestions for everything at once if you like (in the excel file I posted in the first post would be preferable  ).

I've since change my selection for 'Why Go' - the Rotterdam '93 version is awesome and has really prominent bass :nice:

Ok - I’ve listened to everything on the shortlist below and nailed down the IMO best version of most songs.

I’m still yet to decide on the following - does anyone have any other versions of these to add to the list or want to argue their case for one already on it?

Release
Jeremy
Bee Girl
Yellow Ledbetter

I think 2018 might be the year to get this project done - what do you say folks?

Perhaps going through each album (+ b-sides) and discussing our options is the way to do it?

Here's the shortlist for versions suggested so far for 'Ten'. Apologies if I missed any and feel free to add more or champion any already on the list.

Also, the spreadsheet posted on page 1 is still available for anyone who wants to bulk submit suggestions (many thanks to those you did this already - makes this job a lot easier :nice: )

Let the mass-debate begin! :D

I like both versions of Jeremy on this list but 6/8/92 and 4/3/94 are both superb.

What the best source for the Pinkpop 92 Jeremy? Sound quality is a big consideration for this set so I’m reluctant to use TV-sourced audio (hence my reluctance to use the VMA version)...

The FM source on Zomb is excellent stereo. Checks out as lossless too.

After an indecent number of hours comparing different versions (I wouldn't wish listening to Bee Girl 10 times in a row on my worst enemy), I have come up with a near-final list of the definitive versions of all Ten-era songs.

There were a number of criteria for picking versions for this: sound quality, correct lyrics, no guitar flubs, full band (if that is how the song was recorded in the studio), electric rather than acoustic (again, if that is how the song was recorded), and original era/drummer where possible (unless later versions had something really special). Basically, if you had to represent the essence and power of each song through one single live version - which would it be?

After a LOT of deliberation, this is what I came up with. Thank you to everyone for your suggestions and for the discussion to date. You guys now have until the end of this week to discuss and convince me of any changes, otherwise I will be asking WCT to remaster these babies where needed and release them here as soon as they're ready

Great list!

As good as that version of Black is, I can't help feeling that one from the 92-94 era might be a better choice with one of the really passionate "We belong together" tags.

I'm a huge fan of the Atlanta '94 version, particularly the way the band drops out and it's just guitar and vocals during the "And now my bitter hands..." parts. Somehow makes the song even more dramatic.

Plus a great tag with the "I don't think these people understand..." lead-in.

Atlanta 94 was definitely in contention - however I thought the band drop-out, while cool, doesn't properly represent the song (same reason I chose a Jeremy with a proper first chorus).

I've always found Ed's singing on the early versions of Black a bit melodramatic, which contributed to choosing a 2006 version where I think he nails the performance (and the tag). Plus the Italian crowd lift it to a whole new level.

Any other thoughts anyone?

I'm questioning my choice for Even Flow today. Are there any other Dave A versions that kick major ass?...

As this moves to Vs., I hope Animal has Jack on drums. That rat-a-tat-tat thing he does while Ed is doing is "1-2-3-4-5 against one" bit at the end separates it from other versions with other drummers.

I've all but finalised the selections for Ten, but I wanted some feedback on a thought I had.

The Drop In The Park version of Porch is amazing (slightly better than Atlanta 94 in my opinion - the other contender), however, it comes in at a whopping 12:38.

What do people think about deftly cutting out a chunk of the breakdown to make it a bit shorter for the purpose of this compilation? Would that be wrong?

There are other such not-quite-true-to-actual-performance things that will come up:

- I've already pretty much decided I'm going to use the LO2L version of Do The Evolution, however as many know some of the vocals for this version were flown in from another.

- The (probably) best version of Sad (San Fran III 2006) flows into the next track, so requires some minor editing to make give it a proper ending.

Thoughts?...

My 2 cents...

Porch - No cuts, surely? Why do you need to keep the length down? Don't think you need to be catering to the CD burners here.

DTE & Sad - Unless these versions are significantly better than the next best, I'd say use the next best.

Looking forward to the Ten comp being finalised!
