Also, i caught a bit of the London, Ontario 2005 show this morning on Sirius (even though it was labeled as 6-28-03?? - took me a while to find the right show). First off, they performed everything outstanding. They were really peaking in 2005. But, importantly for this thread, the version of Hard to Imagine from this show needs to be nominated. I was at the Chicago '09 show, and that version was great, too, but this is when the song was still nuanced and becoming mature. The perfect blend. Check it out.

And, please, please, please, use a Present Tense when the first verse/chorus was soft and meaningful, before Eddie starting yelling the first chorus.

I've been going through the '05 shows and listened to London earlier this week on the walk to and from work. It's an immaculate show, and has been one of my favorites for a long time. The "Off He Goes" has one of my favorite EV vocal moments: When he sings "...and he's still strong," he does this vaguely gymnastic thing with his voice that I would never think he'd be capable of pulling off with such dexterity. Worth considering for the comp if no Jack versions are suitable.

I really love the "My whole life, with just one man, one man" tag on Betterman from this show. Ed really got into it.

The 2005 shows are really good across the board, but I think their initial mp3-only release, followed by the sound of the FLACs released last year, prevent them from from getting more respect. As RB said earlier, Matt's drums just aren't quite there, and the front of the mix (lead guitars, vocals) is washed out by what feels like a cold, metallic, echoing space.

The Toronto 2000 Dissident is great, especially at the end...Mike plays the outro bit a little differently but it really works well

As for some newer songs:

Come Back - either 5/27/06 or the Immagine in Cornice one

Not a great show and then it all came together for Come Back. Good call.

I think the 05 tour may be their best tour ever, and that is controlling for Matt's Even Flow drum solos.

You shut your dirty mouth.

Also, Calgary 2005 Thumbing My Way is incredible.

Hell yeah! Lock it down, Ridley!

I like the music they cooked up for the 2003 "Patriot" as a standalone thing, but it didn't really absorb the original song very well -- they tried to convert a bog-standard 1-4-5 folkie song into this weird, sideways "Riot Act"-y jam, and they never really found the common ground between the two forms.

Rearrangements really are not this band's forte.

Not sure if the Chop Suey performances count for this. If so, then 1/2 Full from that one.

Yes! Only good performance in that entire run, IMO.

Count me in for YL at TFC too. Mike's playing is fucking inspired on that and Ed's got a nice raspy quality to his voice.

I filled out about half of the spreadsheet tonight -- I'll send it over after I've had a chance to tinker with it a little more, there are a few performances I want to verify. Some songs I'll just leave to other pickers. "Soldier of Love" is not on the spreadsheet -- was this deliberate? For some reason, even if performance count doesn't justify it, I feel like it should be on the comp.

Also, my initial suggestion of using the Bridge School "Better Man" was terrible -- it's a novel version, but really messy. "Romanza" or bust.
