Re: Song of the Moment: Daughter

Well what I want to know is what do you call it when you start with acoustic guitars and vocals, and then the drums have this great fill and suddenly the sound completely changes? In a sense I find that a more 'complex' sound than say...Ghost playing some chords over and over again. No matter how complex the musical notes are. Im just talking about the sound.

Same as that middle section of even Flow where it cuts out to mostly bass and builds back up to the chorus. These are very interesting structures to me which I dont usually see later. In a sense its complexity though not in the technical sense

That's called playing instruments

Ok then why did they stop playing instruments by the time they got to binaural?

Listen, mike,

Also I think you guys are even oversimplifying the structure of the song. Theres almost zero repetition in this song. Compare this to a song like Light Years that has about one minute of content stretched over a five minute song.

Theres only one verse, and even the choruses are distinguished from each other. There's not one second in this song really where you're doing the same thing as you were before. I also find it interesting how the structure of the music doesn't really match the structure of the vocals. Maybe that's what has that striking effect of being both new and familiar at the same time. For example the chorus and the verse are sung over the same background music but it sounds like a new place because of how they get you there, and Eddie's very different melodies. Likewise, the bridge has those different chords used in various places of the song in totally different ways.

I do actually think this is a more complexly PUT TOGETHER song than most songs on binaural and riot act.

Light Years is one of the simplest songs Ive ever heard. Verse, Chorus, Identical verse, Identical chorus, Boring bridge, Identical chorus again. (That then repeats forever and ever)

Of the Girl has about 30 seconds of music stretched over the whole song. I like it but its not exactly that interesting in its structure. Its just 'do the same thing the entire song'

Daughter is remarkably concise, and still you go on a journey.

Its one of their best put together songs.

Another classic is Better Man, not a second of repetition, youre always someplace new and interesting and feel like you went on a journey with the song, and its short too, remarkably compared to others.

So what moment on the middle album matches up with the interesting beginning with the tone change from acoustic and vocals to drums kicking in and then going electric?

I don't know how you feel about Sleight of Hand, mjd, but it has some of those elements and it's an infinitely more complex and interesting song in my opinion.

I guarantee he hates SOH

I went through a phase where I liked it because of the lyrics.

Its fine.

I agree the INDIVIDUAL PIECES OF SLEIGHT OF HAND are more complex than Daughter.

There's nothing interesting in the STRUCTURE of Sleight of Hand though. When you've heard the first 20 seconds you've essentially heard most of what there is to hear. There's really just...two ideas in the song. The verse, and the chorus. Nothing interesting happens after.

For better or worse it creates a mood and just stays there forever. It doesn't really go anywhere. Theres a verse mood and a chorus mood. And they just switch between them.

Honestly these middle albums more than ANY OTHER you could listen to the first 30 seconds of each song and pretty much have heard what there is to hear.

Your viewpoints on pj's music are more ridiculous than LV's tastes in movies. Its beautiful, really.

Daughter has absoluteyl two riffs. The entire song. its not a complex structure. its just not. it is literally two riffs. back and forth. Thats it. The entire song. And thats okay - but its not a complex structure. There is nothing complex about it.

Many of their early albums are not complex. At all. Their middle sections are one riff so mike can noodle over them because they didnt know how/care to write a bridge.

And the main riff is simple. The only thing exciting about it is the tuning.

Re: Song of the Moment: Daughter

Again, the PIECES of Daughter are not complex. The way they USE the pieces is.

For example, they start with acoustic and vocals. And then the drums kick in and the entire sound changes, and its extremely seamless and well done.

That is an interesting choice that is to me much more interesting than sleight of hand which never changes its sound at all.

So daughter is simple but used complexly, while soh is just simple?

That is not an interesting choice. That is just song writing 101. It doesnt change the song at all. It just has drums now.

mike is just impressed with the recording of daughter, but doesn't realize it

SOH is complex elements that don't really do anything beyond that.

Daughter uses a lot of craftsmanship with simple elements to create something wonderful
