I had to actually go through all my 7"s. I don't own Hail, Hail, so I guess I'll be buying at least one thing.

No Code doesn't have much of a decent dynamic range going on as it is.

:? Sometimes --> Hail, Hail and Off He Goes --> Habit both prove this statement wrong, at least to my ears. Never looked at a wav form, though.

The music at the end of Present Tense is some of the best ever recorded by the band. Lots going on with it that would also prove that wrong.

http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/87508

It's on pair with the last 2 records.

This is good news. I'll be happy to have my 2 favorite PJ albums back on the vinyl shelf.

Because I sold my originals to pay for seeing them live. I wasn't a very forward-thinking 25 year old.

I think we need to parse the data...

No Code: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/87508
Lightning Bolt: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/61172

It shows that No Code has an album dynamic range of 7, and LB has a range of 8, but all that means is that LB's quietest and loudest parts are effectively one db larger than No Code's. But look at the actual track comparisons. The first six tracks on LB are nearly identical in volume and dynamic range, while the first half of No Code shows a lot more variety in volume levels:

No Code:

DR9 -0.18 dB -12.42 dB 01 - Sometimes.m4a
DR5 -0.17 dB -6.61 dB 02 - Hail, Hail.m4a
DR7 -0.05 dB -9.00 dB 03 - Who You Are.m4a
DR7 -0.18 dB -8.80 dB 04 - In My Tree.m4a
DR7 -0.18 dB -8.81 dB 05 - Smile.m4a
DR10 -0.05 dB -12.47 dB 06 - Off He Goes.m4a
DR5 -0.17 dB -6.53 dB 07 - Habit.m4a
DR6 -0.18 dB -7.64 dB 08 - Red Mosquito.m4a
DR7 -0.02 dB -9.21 dB 09 - Lukin.m4a
DR9 -0.18 dB -13.75 dB 10 - Present Tense.m4a
DR7 -0.01 dB -8.33 dB 11 - Mankind.m4a
DR8 -0.12 dB -10.69 dB 12 - I'm Open.m4a
DR8 -0.05 dB -10.30 dB 13 - Around the Bend.m4a

LB:

DR7 -0.30 dB -8.31 dB 3:27 1/12-Getaway
DR7 -0.23 dB -8.03 dB 2:39 2/12-Mind Your Manners
DR7 -0.30 dB -7.96 dB 3:07 3/12-My Father's Son
DR7 -0.30 dB -8.42 dB 5:41 4/12-Sirens
DR7 -0.30 dB -9.01 dB 4:13 5/12-Lightning Bolt
DR7 -0.30 dB -8.35 dB 5:22 6/12-Infallible
DR10 -0.30 dB -12.23 dB 3:44 7/12-Pendulum
DR7 -0.30 dB -9.04 dB 3:52 8/12-Swallowed Whole
DR8 -0.30 dB -9.39 dB 3:47 9/12-Let the Records Play
DR8 -0.30 dB -10.90 dB 3:04 10/12-Sleeping by Myself
DR7 -0.30 dB -9.17 dB 3:52 11/12-Yellow Moon

You'll need both hands free for this.

(I'm not suggesting my balls are huge, just that they've begun to sag an awful lot as I've gotten older).
