The self-titled 'Avocado' recording sessions began at Studio X in December 2004, with the disappointment of the 2004 US election result following the 'Vote For Change' tour fresh in the band's minds. Over the next few months, a number of demos and rough mixes were recorded, some of which surfaced in 2014 via a leaked progress disc labelled 'Rough Mixes 02 April 05'. Few songs from on this disc had even place-holder lyrics, and only three of them eventually made it onto the album.
Pearl Jam reconvened in late November 2005 following their tour of North and South America. They put finishing touches on some of the earlier rough mixes and recorded five new songs that would appear on the finished album released on May 2, 2006.
In July 2013, two of the tracks known to be recorded in December 2004 were leaked online - 'Let It Ride' and 'Cold Confession' - and were warmly welcomed by fans. These songs and the rough mixes disc indicated what a different direction Pearl Jam's eighth album might have taken if they had wrapped it up prior to touring in 2005.
Following on from 'Binaural [Deluxe]', this compilation gives 'Avocado' the deluxe treatment, bringing together all known recordings from these album sessions, as well as the 'AOL Sessions' which were webcast soon after the release of the album.
If ever an album required remastering, it is this one. A casuality of the 'loudness war', it was mastered so loud the the whole album was 'brickwalled' to death. The warmth and separation of the instruments was lost and it was widely criticised as being difficult to listen to, especially with headphones. In early 2015, internet user BrickwallHater took it upon himself to try and 'remaster' the album into something more inviting. While it obviously isn't possible to unscramble the egg so to speak, he made it sound brighter and clearer, giving the drums more kick and making the guitars more crisp. The results are impressive and are presented here on Disc 1 along with 'Let It Ride' and 'Cold Confession' - the only completed outtakes to have seen the light of day to date. Some minor adjustments have been made to these two tracks to bring them into line with the rest of the album.
The 'Rough Mixes' disc is presented on Disc 2, with some similarly minor adjustments made to most tracks. Also included is 'Forest Is My Church', a Jeff Ament written demo taken from the skateboard scene of 'Immagine In Cornice', which would eventually be used as the basis for the song 'The Forest' from his solo album 'Tone'. The acoustic demo of 'Gone' recorded in a hotel room by Ed while on tour in Atlantic City (and released on the 2005 TenClub 7" Holiday single) rounds out the currently available demos and rough mixes.
**All tracks except for the BrickwallHater remaster and 'Gone (Atlantic City Demo)' are taken from lossy sources - if anyone comes across a lossless upgrade for any of these, please contact me (ridleybradout AT hotmail.com), and I will gladly update this collection.

Definitely interested in checking this out, since I could never find a working torrent for the Brickwallhater edition. I'd be grateful for a link, if that's alright, Brad.
