I just can't stand Axl's personality anymore--too much dirtball misogyny and stone-faced serious macho horseshit. There is some good rock songwriting in there but I find it breaks through less and less as I get older. Slash is a great guitarist who should have had a career in a different genre.
Axl's sheer hatred of humanity is too important to their sound. With all the poser metalheads pretending to hate, Axl really loathes people. But that raging, Cobra Commander like voice is worth all his misanthropy.

Stupid Mop has always felt superfluous at the end of the record, though I enjoyed reading some of the interpretations of its placement earlier in the thread.
The other "arty" pieces hold their weight and tie the album together thematically, even though I don't usually listen to them. Pry, To is polite and inoffensive enough. Of the more complete 10 songs, I'd say that Whipping and Satan's Bed may be the only ones that drop the standard. Admittedly, that is an incredible standard.
I'd forgotten how good Tremor Christ is. What a song!

If you remove Aye Davanita and Stupid Mop this album is utterly flawless.
Last Exit - then, Spin the black circle -then, Not for you. If you don't like Pearl Jam after that shit, then it ain't ever gonna happen for you.
I definitely wouldn't take out Aye Davanita, but Stupid Mop is the stupidest thing they've ever done. STBC is one of the weaker songs for me, but Last Exit is so perfect, I only remember to dislike STBC as Not For You begins.

My favorite album by anyone. I also think this holds up really well agaist the greatest albums of all time, now for the flaws. 1. Stbc and Betterman don't fit 2. Stbc and Betterman could have fit with more creative tracking like this Last Exit Cordaroy Not For You TremorChrist Pry To Betterman Spin The Black Circle Ay Davita Nothingman Whipping Satan's Bed Immortality hidden track Bugs 3. Cordaroy should have been the lead single 4. A place could have been found in Nothingman for Mike to wail 5. It is a logical extention of Backspacer
