Baskspacer is great and is a better record than any band has a right to release at this late stage in its career.
Even if you don’t like it, at least they tried something different and still managed to do it through their own prism. Maybe it would have been universally loved if they’d dropped their own prism entirely. But here we are.
I think Backspacer suffers only because its 1 of 2 albums in the last 10 years.
It would be like if Neil Young released Trans and then didnt release anything again until Broken Arrow

I do think there's some songwriting deficiencies that can't be overcome, but the opening four tracks of BS are the finest part of it, IMO, hewing relatively close to the idea they had going in of making a quick, nimble record. It just that it goes completely off the rails after that, both in terms of the songwriting as well as in adhering to the original idea. Those first four songs fit pretty easily into that idea of a poppier album looking back towards groups like The Cars and other times when new wave met pop, but then this happens...
Just Breathe Amongst the Waves Unthought Known Supersonic
...and it keeps going like that. It feels like the album loses the thread of what it wants to be about ten minutes into it.

That’s fair looking at it as a whole.
I could point out that we’re making assumptions based on its short run time and it’s front loaded. There’s quality all over the record but it’s liddle section is where it sags then it’s wuality at the back.

Musically I like Lightning Bolt. But the songwriting doesn't take into account Ed's current vocal range and stylings. The music swells in places where Ed's vocals only act like a drag.

It's an awkward admission, but I barely take the time to learn song titles anymore when I'm listening to music. If I like it I like it and if I don't I delete it from the computer.
