R.E.M worked differently. After 'out of time' and 'automatic' Peter Buck wanted a rock record to tour. So he wrote most of 'Monster'. Mike Mills worked very hard on 'Reveal' and 'Around the Sun'. Around the Sun was a huge flop. Peter even stated in interviews that he did not like that record. Well, they grew apart. They acknowledged that and talked about it. They came back as inspired as ever with 'Accelerate'. Why I tell this? Well, from on outside perspective on PJ it seems that they are not talking about it, maybe they don't even acknowledge they are not functioning creatively as a band. Nor does Ed let Jeff take the wheel for the next record. REM did seem to acknowledge when they were on a low point. Also in that band it seemed that they gave each other creative control over the band at times. At this moment PJ could clearly benefit from both.
Can you imagine that this could even happen in Pearl Jam? That jeff would go on record saying that he doesn't like 'LB'? Or that Ed's hand the creative control over to Jeff for the next record?

I don’t know that I had ever really noticed how absent he is from post-Binaural writing credits, until this post. Odd that he powered down for their “return to form” phase, of all things.

Especially when you consider those solo albums, I think even BS/LB fans would agree that there are aspects to the outside work that could strengthen the albums the bands are making, and expand what they're capable of doing. But it's impossible to imagine songs like those making a PJ record right now. I'm just curious as to what part of the decision-making process is leading to a relatively narrow framework they're working off of? Is it just Eddie is not interested in that kind of music? It just seems like they've narrowed what they allow onto a PJ record into a relatively narrow box, which is all the more odd because they were never a band known for a particular, identifiable musical trademark (like Edge's guitar with U2, for example).

Yes. And I think that's what's left the sort of fan I was feeling abandoned and disinterested. I liked them for their sense of rebellion and relentlessness and strength in the face of adversity. Now it feels like they have forsaken all their great qualities. For what? It feels lazy and empty.
