"It's fast, punchy and light on its feet," said the band's longterm producer Brendan O'Brien. "There's some punky rockers and some gorgeous ballads. They're not going to rock the boat with this album. They're just going to deliver the rock. It's my job to add the strings."

ugh. I do get tired of these types of interviews and responses. Like they're going to say it's a fresh pile of cow dung that was pressed into a circle.

I really can’t figure out why the band’s internal dynamic doesn’t prevent them from releasing horrible music. Everything up to and including the S/T album is, at the very least, pretty good; subtly interesting guitar arrangements, unexpected vocal melodies, etc. All of that disappeared almost overnight and now it’s as though no idea is too dumb, nothing is too on the nose. An exclusive diet of low-hanging fruit. I expect little more from Ed or Mike but are Stone, Jeff and Matt genuinely proud of this garbage? Or is it just like punching a time card at this point? Is it all Brendan’s malignant influence, nixing anything remotely interesting or challenging because that won’t play well on TV sports advert transitions or whatever?
