i know! also...Chicago Cab soundtrack version of that is the definitive take.
If a version of a song saw the light of day before Lost Dogs - HTI, Alone, etc - those are the definitive versions. The re-recordings suck. That harmonica on footsteps might work live, but I hate it on record.

Does anyone know which version of Hard To Imagine is from which album session? Or is it the same recording with just a different vocal take?
Wikipedia doesn't give a straight answer:
Quote:
Originally from the Chicago Cab soundtrack. This version has a different vocal recording and mix than the soundtrack version, featuring alternate lyrics. The booklet lists this as a Vs. outtake,[13] although it had been reported to be from the Vitalogy sessions.
The version of Hard to Imagine on Lost Dogs is from the Vs. sessions. I first heard it in the Hallucinogenic Recipes bootleg box set well before Vitalogy was released. The Chicago Cab version was rerecorded during the Vitalogy sessions. To me, the Lost Dogs version (vs session) is the definitive version because it was out there first.

It's Chicago Cab for me, only bc that's what I first heard. Man I have it on now and forgot I listened to this version so much in the days after 9-11. I was 16 or so.

Hard to Imagine will always hold a real special place in my heart....despite being a huge fan since (almost) day one i had never even heard the song till the band played it at my first ever show (Montreal 98). It was around that time that i finally discovered the online community and remember the old Five Horizons making a big deal about the band playing it for the first time in like 4 years and eventually distributing a bootleg version as their song of the month (or song X or whatever it was called).

yeah, it was great that they played it a few times during the Yield tour. it'd be great if more of those shows see an official release one day.

Not only do I fully support this, but I venture to say that if Pearl Jam just put those and the Brother with lyrics on Lost Dogs, it would have made a huge difference on my view of this release. I’d also add the original Footsteps should be added to this list and if I remember correctly Drifting sounds different also on Lost Dogs. There seemed to be a need from probably ‘04 through ‘13 to overwork some songs to death on one extreme and to leave other songs unfinished to the other extreme. In the middle of that was Backspacer, an album that probably ultimately represents everything about that time for better and worse.

While I agree these are the superior versions, I’m glad we now have more than one available.

Interesting! I've always been more partial to the Chicago Cab version but love both.
Digging around the band apparently gave the song another go during the No Code sessions.
