Album Win/Loss Record (2014)

Wed March 05, 2014 1:48 pm

Final Standings!

Ultimate Standings - These standings represent each album's average standing across the other 4 ranking systems. Ties (there are two of them) are broken by which album had a highest rank in any system (so, for example: Vs. and "Other" were tied for fourth, but "Other" was third in Weighted Wins and Vs. never ranked higher than fourth, so "Other" goes higher).

1. Vitalogy
2. No Code
3. Binaural
4. Other
5. Vs
6. Yield
7. Ten
8. Riot Act
9. B-Sides
10.Pearl Jam
11. Lost Dogs
12. Lightning Bolt
13. Christmas Singles
14. Backspacer
15. Demos/Leaks

Total Wins - Simply the total number of wins across all rounds; each win counts as one point, regardless of rounds.

1. Vitalogy - 32
2. No Code - 25
3. Yield - 20
3. Binaural - 20
4. Vs - 19
4. Other - 19
5. Ten - 16
6. Riot Act - 12
7. B-Sides - 11
8. Pearl Jam - 10
9. Lightning Bolt - 7
9. Lost Dogs - 7
9. Christmas Singles - 7
10. Backspacer - 6
11. Demos/Leaks - 0

Win Percentage - Win percentage across all rounds, using win number from "Total Wins." Ties are broken with number of wins first, then by number of losses.

1. Vitalogy - 32-14-0.696
2. No Code - 25-15-0.625
3. Binaural - 20-12-0.625
4. Vs - 19-12-0.613
5. Yield - 20-13-0.606
6. Ten - 16-12-0.571
7. Other - 19-22-0.463
8. Riot Act - 12-14-0.462
9. B-Sides - 11-13-0.458
10. Pearl Jam - 10-13-0.435
11. Lightning Bolt - 7-12-0.368
11. Lost Dogs - 7-12-0.368
12. Backspacer - 6-11-0.353
13. Christmas Singles - 7-21-0.250
14. Demos/Leaks - 0-15-0.000

Weighted Wins - In this ranking system, Round 1 wins are only worth half a point, since there were so many blowouts in that round. A win in every other round is worth 1 point.

1. Vitalogy - 28
2. No Code - 21.5
3. Other - 17.5
4. Binaural - 16.5
5. Vs - 16
5. Yield - 16
6. Ten - 13.5
7. Riot Act - 9
8. Pearl Jam - 7
9. B-Sides - 6.5
10. Lost Dogs - 5
11. Lightning Bolt - 4.5
12. Christmas Singles - 4
13. Backspacer - 3.5
14. Demos/Leaks - 0

Super Weighted Wins - For this system, Round 1 wins are only worth half of a point, for the same reasons above. Round 2 wins are worth 1, Round 3 wins are worth 1.5...and then every round goes up half of a point.

1. Vitalogy - 47.5
2. No Code - 29.5
3. Binaural - 27.5
4. Other - 25
5. Vs - 21.5
6. Yield - 18
7. Ten - 17.5
8. Riot Act - 10.5
9. Pearl Jam - 7.5
10. B-Sides - 6.5
11. Lost Dogs - 5.5
12. Lightning Bolt - 4.5
13. Christmas Singles - 4
14. Backspacer - 3.5
15. Demos/Leaks - 0

Even though I'm interested in this, I'm not sure how telling they'll be in the end. I'll calculate a win % for each and such, but it'll be weird eventually when we have a lot of songs from the same album going head-to-head.

Any chance you can split etc. into Lost Dogs and etc. Some of this stuff is really deep cuts.

Yeah, we'll have to weight the losses or something. Everyone in the end will be 0-12 with one album being 1-12.

Well, no, not the way I'm scoring it. The idea is to add up the win/loss record of every song off an album, so albums that have many songs that go deep will have a better record, while those that are eliminated early will have very few wins. But yeah, weighting this first round will probably be necessary because of the number of songs that got byes (1/2 of a win for the first round?).

B-Sides
Lost Dogs
Christmas Singles
Live Covers
Demos/Leaks
Other

Only songs that were only released (or first released) on Lost Dogs will count for that one. B-Sides are only for songs that don't appear elsewhere (so the "Gone" demo doesn't count, for example). Other is for soundtrack songs and benefit releases and such (Crazy Mary, Hard to Imagine, Whale Song, etc.). Any other categories I need?

Trying this out once, then back to planning for classes/grading papers...

If you go by straight-up number of wins on the first day, here are the Album Standings:
Standings by Number of Wins wrote:1. Binaural- 3
2. Vs - 2
2.. Vitalogy - 2
2. Yield - 2
2. Riot Act - 2
2. Lightning Bolt - 2
2. Other - 2
3. No Code - 1
3. B-Sides - 1
3. Lost Dogs - 1
4. Ten - 0
4. Pearl Jam - 0
4. Backspacer - 0
4. Christmas Singles - 0
4. Live Covers - 0
4. Demos/Leaks - 0

It's still way early, of course, but Binaural is out to a slim lead, and there's a 6-way tie for second (and a three-way tie for third). There will be fewer ties as we move along...I think?

And if you sort by winning percentage, you get:

1. Binaural 3-0-1.000
2. Vs - 2-0-1.000
2. Vitalogy - 2-0-1.000
2. Yield - 2-0-1.000
2. Lightning Bolt - 2 -0-1.000
3. B-Sides - 1-0-1.000
3. Lost Dogs - 1-0-1.000
4. Other - 2-1-0.667
5. Riot Act - 2-2-0.500
6. No Code - 1-2-0.333
7. Ten - 0-1-0.000
7. Pearl Jam - 0-1-0.000
8. Christmas Singles - 0-2-0.000
9. Demos/Leaks - 0-9-0.000

Note that Backspacer and Live Covers aren't in this list, as they haven't been involved in any matches yet. The separation here is caused by the sorting functions I chose to use. Highest win percentage is the first condition, second is number of wins, third is number of losses. The biggest fall here is Riot Act (tied for 2nd all the way down to 5th), which gets penalized for only winning half of its matches so far. B-Sides and Lost Dogs jump over Riot Act and No Code because they don't have any losses yet.

So this obviously isn't a perfect system (some albums have fewer songs than others, so Backspacer will never have as many losses as Vitalogy if they both get eliminated, for example). I am going to try and work out a points system that corrects for this (i.e., losses affect standings negatively but each album can only get "10" loss points in the end, for example). We'll see what I come up with!

I've been thinking about it, and I'm probably over-thinking it all. I think the most interesting stats can probably be compiled just from the amount of wins, with maaaaybe the first and much later rounds being weighted differently.

So I already screwed this up once and had to start over, basically...but here are the standings after Day 2!

Total Wins:
1. (2.) Vitalogy - 5
1. (4.) Backspacer - 5
2. (1.) Binaural - 4
3. (2.) Yield - 3
4. (4.) Ten - 2
4. (2.) Vs - 2
4. (2.) Riot Act - 2
4. (2.) Lightning Bolt - 2
4. (3.) B-Sides - 2
4. (3.) Lost Dogs - 2
4. (2.) Other - 2
5. (3.) No Code - 1
5. (4.) Pearl Jam - 1
5. (4.) Christmas Singles - 1
6. (4.) Demos/Leaks - 0
6. (4.) Live Covers - 0

Number in the parentheses was each album's ranking yesterday. Win percentage coming later! Kinda surprised how high Backspacer climbed.

Looks like BS has 4 wins, not 5.

Many round one matches mean nothing given how many marginal songs are there. Backspacer is going to fall off a cliff in round 2, sadly.

Whoops, counted Getaway as a BS song! Updated numbers in my next post.

I'm kind of surprised that Riot Act doesn't rank higher in either set of standings; we'll see if Stip's right about the Backspacer Cliff.

Updated Standings:

Total Wins:

1. (1) Vitalogy - 7 (+2)
2. (3) Yield - 5 (+2)
2. (2) Binaural - 5 (+1)
3. (4) Vs - 4 (+2)
3. (4) Riot Act - 4 (+2)
3. (2) Backspacer - 4 (+0)
3. (4) B-Sides - 4 (+2)
4. (4) Ten - 3 (+1)
4. (5) No Code - 3 (+2)
4. (3) Lightning Bolt - 3 (+0)
4. (4) Lost Dogs - 3 (+1)
5. (4) Other - 2 (+0)
6. (5) Pearl Jam - 1 (+0)
6. (5) Christmas Singles - 1 (+0)
7. (6) Demos/Leaks - 0 (+0)
7. (6) Live Covers - 0 (+0)

Sorry about all the numbers! First number is current rank, followed in parentheses by previous rank. Number of current wins is followed by number gained in the last round of voting. Vitalogy is still going strong, but the fact that it's already had 9 songs participating may allow some others to catch up in next 2-3 days. Poor Demos/Leaks + Live Covers are still waiting for their first wins.

Win Percentage:

1. (2) Yield - 5-0-1.000
1. (1) Binaural - 5-0-1.000
2. (1) Backspacer - 4-0-1.000
3. (6) Vs - 4-1-0.800
4. (4) Vitalogy - 7-2-0.778
5. (3) B-Sides - 4-2-0.667
6. (6) Ten - 3-2-0.600
7. (10) No Code - 3-3-0.500
7. (5) Lightning Bolt - 3-3-0.500
8. (8) Riot Act - 4-5-0.444
9. (7) Other - 2-3-0.400
10. (9) Lost Dogs - 3-6-0.333
11. (10) Pearl Jam - 1-2-0.333
12. (11) Christmas Singles - 1-7-0.125
13. (12) Live Covers - 0-1-0.000
14. (13) Demos/Leaks - 0-12-0.000

Lots of movement near the top this time!

Total Wins:

1. (1) Vitalogy - 8 (+1)
2. (3) B-Sides - 7 (+3)
3. (4) No Code - 6 (+3)
3. (2) Binaural - 6 (+1)
3. (3) Riot Act - 6 (+2)

5. (6) Christmas Singles - 4 (+3)
6. (4) Lost Dogs - 3 (0)
7. (6) Pearl Jam - 2 (+1)
7. (5) Other - 2 (0)
8. (7) Demos/Leaks - 0 (0)
8. (7) Live Covers - 0 (0)

Vitalogy remains on top (no real surprise there), but B-Sides and No Code made a rush towards the top in this part of Round 1. Poor Demons/Leaks and Live Covers :(

Win Percentage:
1. (1) Yield - 5-0-1.000
2. (1) Binaural - 6-1-0.857
3. (2) Backspacer - 5-1-0.833
4. (4) Vitalogy - 8-2-0.800
5. (5) Vs - 4-1-0.800
6. (5) B-Sides - 7-2-0.778
7. (7) No Code - 6-4-0.600
8. (6) Ten - 4-3-0.571
9. (8) Riot Act - 6-5-0.545
10. (7) Lightning Bolt - 4-4-0.500
11. (11) Pearl Jam - 2-3-0.400
12. (10) Lost Dogs - 3-6-0.333
13. (12) Christmas Singles - 4-10-0.286
14. (9) Other - 2-8-0.200
15. (13) Live Covers - 0-2-0.000
16. (14) Demos/Leaks - 0-14-0.000

Even though some ties were broken, the top 5 remain basically the same.

Yeah, it hasn't been up against many powerhouses so far:

Amongst the Waves vs. 2000 Mile Blues
The Fixer vs. Bee Girl
etc.

The closest match was Getaway beating Leash by 1 vote. After round two, I'm going to have a third set of standings where each first round win is only worth half a win, and that will probably show which albums where "phantom" leaders after Round 1.
