The chorus to I Am Mine is one of the most plodding, unimaginative combinations of chords and melody they’ve ever put forth. It bores me to tears before I even consider the bad lyrics.

isn't it G>Am>D? I can't even think of another pearl jam song that uses that chord progression.

I don't think when he says the chord progression is unimaginative he means that Pearl Jam uses it a lot. It's a I - ii - V progression which is very common. but to me the problem is that it's performed and arranged in a way that feels so plodding and perfunctory

Trag loses me when he goes on to praise "Future Days" which to me is one of the most boring and go-nowhere compositions Ed has ever written but I get what he's saying about the "I Am Mine" chorus

so this is kinda like the argument about songs in 4 are not as good lol

i think part of the problem with this album for me is EV's voice. i listened to cropduster last night and he sounds like he's falling asleep in the verses. there's certain parts of the song i like a lot, but it's too disjointed for me.

This was the often heard complaint when the album came out. I never had any issues with his singing style on RA and I appreciated it even more after Avocado came out and I heard how horrible he sounded e.g. on Comatose when he was really pushing his voice.

I always get a special feeling when Can't Keep starts. Not sure how to describe it though.

There’s a push/pull tension thing that only exists in a handful of their songs.

The studio version is perfect. Not sure there's a single thing that could be improved.

Yeah, I am pretty confident in Can’t Keep being my favorite song off Riot Act. There’s a few others in the conversation (You Are, Half Full, HelpHelp, and All or None), but that one just kills to open an album.

Cant Keep is amazing. I remember being so surprised on how the band reworked it because i think Ed played it live before...all tomorrow parties i think? and it was just him and the uke....and then boom, this is pearl jam motherfuckers.

So if I put Can’t Keep at the start of Lightning Bolt... the album will sound good?

the sentence was in past tense, you can't make new good albums starting with Can't Keep

I feel this too.

They started the first 2005 show in St. John's (my hometown) with this song. Still gives me chills thinking about it.

Nice performance.

Maybe just hyperbole. But this album felt like the end of an era. Two decades now.
