Since Mike is a friend to everyone in the band, and they witnessed his struggles and everything else, I'm sure the guys in the band thought the song was far more impactful then it actually ended up being.
And yeah, I think this. Plus, Ed and everyone else in the band have had their share of lyrical clunkers. I would probably put Inside Job near the bottom of the pile in terms of lyrics they've put out, but I don't necessarily believe that Ed and the band would think the same.

They were certainly aiming high with Inside Job. It sounds like it was intended to be a major piece. It's placement on the record concurs. They fell short. There are some moments within the song that are quite nice but ultimately when I hear it I'm left unmoved. It's not a song I have ever put on.
But at least they tried. Over the last two records there hasn't been a song with that aim (excepting maybe Lightning Bolt which also falls short). Sirens tries for the emotional punch and it too sounds rather forced.
