Here you all go. I figured I'd make a new thread for this so it doesn't derail the other Soundgarden thread.

* Lossy source
** Less-than-stellar audio source

This set was a long time in the making. Culled from hundreds of different Soundgarden bootlegs, Z-Sides represents the entire arc of the band's career, from three-piece blues rock (the first track is a demo of "Incessant Mace" with none other than Chris Cornell on drums) to reunited world-beaters, as evidenced by the outstanding tracks from the past four years. There is something special about the chemistry between Chris, Kim, Matt and Ben, and this is obvious when you listen to the quantum leap that Soundgarden made in the middle of disc 2. Together, the quartet made three outstanding albums before breaking up, only to return with an excellent album and some of the best concerts of the band's career 15 years later. This set is essential listening for any serious Soundgarden fan.

Compiling this set was not easy. Though I have access to almost every Soundgarden bootleg in existence, so much of what exists is poor in quality. Some inclusions were obvious, such as all of the demo recordings, the 1996 Live and Loud set and material from this year's performances of Superunknown in full. Some things were less obvious, and required a massive and time-consuming search to identify and (in some cases) remaster. These rough gems are absolutely worth including! Among them is an extremely rare live performance of "Birth Ritual" from a set in Olympia before the release of Badmotorfinger. Another such gem is a scorching performance of "Never the Machine Forever" at the band's last Seattle show before the breakup. Also essential listening are the rare interviews with the band, which provide insight into their creative process. Taken as a whole, you'll find this to be a well-rounded, nuanced set of new songs, covers and stellar performances of old favorites. You'll even discover a few oddities you probably never knew existed, such Chris Cornell's solo cover of Syd Barrett's "Dark Globe" from one of the band's last ever shows in Australia in February 1997. It's stuff like this that made me want to compile this set, and I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed creating it.

As for the quality of the recordings: superior performances were chosen over superior quality. Regardless of the rough quality of a handful of performances and the lossy origins of several others, you will not find another Soundgarden bootleg set with quality this high. It goes without saying then that this should be passed amongst fans given away to those who really want it. DO NOT post this on torrent sites (you'll have to remove all of the lossy stuff - it isn't worth it) and DO NOT, EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SELL THIS SET. If I ever find this for sale, anywhere, under any circumstances, I will take drastic measures (don't ask what they are). I spent 15 years compiling the sources for this and hundreds and hundreds of hours compiling, organizing and mixing this set. Don't ask about better quality versions of this stuff - either it doesn't exist, or it isn't out there for me to find. This is what it is - TOTAL FUCKING GODHEAD.

A few other notes:
* You can download individual discs, in which you'll find liner notes about each disc. There's no artwork - I'm not good at it, and I didn't feel like making any. Feel free to make your own.
* I would appreciate if this didn't get posted on the Soundgarden forums or the SOMMS Facebook page. It's not that I don't want people to hear it (I do) - it's that certain parties may take offense to a collection like this. I'll leave that vague.
* Feel free to email this to whoever wants it, though; I just don't want this ending up for sale or getting me in trouble in some way. This is for fans, by a huge fan. That's all. I spent way too much time working on it for free.
* I will update this set if some other stuff surfaces that is worthy of inclusion. There's tons of stuff out there I don't have because it hasn't surfaced, or because people never answered my emails. I could go into detail about it, but it's just depressing to realize what we might never hear.
* I did very little remastering. Most of this is just the raw versions. The only real remastering I did was on the Pinkpop 1992 songs on Disc 2, which required speed correction and EQ; on the version of "Beyond the Wheel" on disc 5, in which I matrixed two recordings to bring out the power in the performance; and on some of the 1994 live stuff, because it needed a little EQ to add some oomph.
* Why don't we have any more live stuff from 1997? I hope somebody can answer that for me because I've never understood it.
* Also included is a mp3 of "Ugly Truth" from some awards ceremony in 1989. I've never been able to find a lossless copy of this but it needs to be out there. Think of it as a bonus-bonus track.
* Feel free to critique, etc. Just don't ask me why your favorite song isn't there, because I guarantee I thought about it before I finished this. I'm a complete and total perfectionist.
* Thanks for reading!

Initial thoughts:

All the 88-89 stuff is great. It's so nice having this stuff arranged in order instead of scrolling through youtube vids.

Power Trip is such a great song. Totally overlooked. Wish they'd bust it out now.

Love the selection of the opening 3 songs from the Sydney 94 show. I'd mentioned earlier that that's my favorite version of Incessant Mace. Great to see it on here.

Birth Ritual from Olympia 91 over LA 92? Probably the right call, just curious as to some of the tough decisions.

I wish maybe a bit more from the 95 Euro festival run had been included, but that's a minor quibble. This is awesome stuff.

This "Birth Ritual" is a little better, to me. It's also a bit slower too. I listened to the LA version (both recordings, actually) and I decided I preferred the Olympia version better.

I was going to include some of the 1995 Euro tour stuff but I already had a ton of Superunknown material so it kind of got left in the shuffle.

Here's something to ponder:

In 1994-1995, during the era of Superunknown, Soundgarden was arguably one of the 4-5 biggest bands in the world. And yet, they did absolutely no TV or radio appearances, or at least appearances in which they performed a song. Think about that - nothing. Anywhere. I've always found that really odd. It had to be a conscious decision on the band's part, but I'm not really sure why.

This is the only thing I could find, and it's clearly from a concert as opposed to a studio somewhere:

They also played the Reading Festival in 1995 and were one of the few bands that didn't do allow any FM or TV broadcasts, other than clips of a few songs on MTV.

Interesting.

I was pondering how rare it is for a band to have a later-stage-in-career performance like the SWXSW Superunknown show to contain some of the best live versions of those songs.

Pretty amazing

They were like mythic figures to me in the 90s. Outside of the music I knew almost nothing about them. If it wasn't in Rolling Stone, Spin or MTV News I wouldn't have seen it. I had my $50 Fresh Deadly Rarities Boot and the four Self Pollution songs. I saw them in 96 and then they were done. They were ultimate to me in terms of what a band should be. Probably cause I could fill in the dots. It wasn't till Audioslave and Scream that my notion of things were derailed a bit but that passed. I guess I know they are human beings now and not gods of thunder. Actually I'm still not sure.

Thanks for sharing your hard work Matt - this looks awesome :nice:

I've only ever been a casual Soundgarden fan but this has inspired me to look deeper into their catalogue and history - cheers!
