I still find things to enjoy about the studio cut, but it was a mid-tier Yield song for me even in its heyday. I’ve never loved the live version once Matt joined, as all subtlety on the verses went right out the window.

for all that I prefer Dave A in style, Jack's best songs required a real almost reluctant sensitivity in some spots; Matt just doesn't have it, but it would have helped a song like River Cross (I love that song anyway)

Me too.

That 'reluctant sensitivity' (great phrase) is something unique to Jack's playing in the band and something he brings in spades to songs like Sometimes, Off He Goes, Around the Bend, Wishlist, etc.

Co-sign -- all songs that were never the same again after he left (I say as one who has enjoyed plenty of Matt versions of those tunes).
