Re: Song of the Moment: Long Road

it is an oasis in their live catalogue that has managed to remain relatively un-polluted by contemporary PJ 'fixins' such as call and response, super fast tempo, and weird vocal tics

when mikejasond gets older and hits his teens he’s gonna be embarrassed by some of these posts.

wish they would at least do like 1 novelty show with Jack Irons

or an entire Mirrorball tour with Jack and Neil

it's the least they could do

This is the kind of song that really would benefit from a call and response.

I’ve been listening to Vitalogy a lot lately, and along with it, the Merkinball single, as they were released a year apart.

I love Long Road, and I’ve loved it since the first time I heard it on a Hartford radio station (can’t remember which one). My first show (Hartford ‘96) opened with it, and I was entranced from the opening note.

As many times as I’ve listened to it, I hadn’t noticed - until today - at the 4:27/28 mark, there’s a chk chk sound right before the chord is played, maybe. Sorry, not a musician, so I probably sound like a idiot. I love discovering new intricacies of a song, parts that make me keep going back to listen for them.

Great song. Great era of the band.

I'm pretty sure a repeat of 2019 is the least they can do. They seem very content doing that.

Seeing it live is fun, but I still remember opening up the Merkin Ball LP and those two songs made for the perfect PJ release.

This is one of my favorites.

The TB2K version is the one that really got me into this song. Also, the 9/11 tribute with Neil is excellent as well.

Totally forgot about the one on the Dead Man Walking soundtrack. That cd is collecting dust somewhere and I probably haven't heard that track since the 90's.

When Pearl Jam first released the 2000 bootlegs, my buddy and I each picked one up and drove to a remote location, lit up a joint, and proceeded to listen to the first show.

He'd seen them on the Yield and Binaural tours, but I had no idea what their live shows were like. Anyway, Long Road was the first song we heard, and it made an immediate impression on me. That was my introduction to Pearl Jam starting off a show slowly, and I felt it was really impactful given their reputation as a "hard rock" band, or whatever. I also loved that TB2K started the same way.

Fast forward to 2003 and my first time seeing them in person, and they started with Long Road. I dunno, it's just always had a place in my heart. I think it's one of the most authentic, tender things they've ever done. ❤️

In recent years, this has become my favourite opener. It's opened more shows I've been to than any other song, and it sets the tone perfectly for the evening to come.

Musically, it's a perfect example of less is more. Simple chords, but it's utterly gorgeous. One of my favourite Ed vocal performances, and when they do it live it's still pretty perfect. Barcelona 2018 floored me.

Long Road is the kind of song that sets Pearl Jam apart from their peers.

I was lucky enough to see it in San Diego 2006. :heartbeat:

Is that the one with the origin story by Ed about his teacher?

5 stars. I don't know if I have a favorite Pearl Jam song, but this would be in contention for it.

Still have never seen it live though...

It is. I'd only seen it twice before that and for it to open the 1st encore and include the origin story....it was one of those special moments.

This is a song I never reach for. I’m not sure I actually remember what it sounds like.

It has that part that goes "we all walk the long road". Remember?
