Nothing as It Seems, Insignificance, Grievance, Rival, and Parting Ways are very very good. The rest of the album I could largely take or leave. Breakerfall and Light Years almost get to stay
when binaural nails its atmosphere it really nails it
this is probably pearl jam’s most maddeningly inconsistent album
Interesting you see it this way. I feel its one of the most consistent from them. I would say Vs, No Code, Yield, Binaural and Gigaton are...But both Binaural and Gigaton also had a particular sound all through the album.
There have been times when this is my favorite PJ record. The atmosphere and sound is vital, but I think it just comes down to the fact that this has a whole bunch of PJ's best tunes. I tend to put Yield and Vitalogy above this one, but even with those records, I'm not sure there's a sequence as emotionally powerful as this record's back half.

Man, VG, we have some really similar thoughts on Binaural and Gigaton.

light years will always feel like a missed opportunity to me. They got it right in puzzles and games. the verses work okay, and I like the chorus music (and the bridge is great). I just think the chorus vocal melody underserves the sentiment. And the affectations and choices I dont like in some of Eddie’s Yield performances are front and center here.
what a slow start this album has
Puzzles and Games may be one of the more overrated pieces of music the band has, and I'm happy they salvaged the best part for the eventual song.
who overrates it besides me?
Hm, maybe times and8 preferences have changed; I always felt like it was seen as this hidden gem, but that's just off the top of my head.
The lyrics, guitar melody and ed's vocal melodies in the verses are enough to consider this one a gem, unless people want to preserve their idea that vitalogy is their best album!

it's too clunky and calculated for the heart on sleeve sentiment in the chorus. The first verse is overwritten, too. Good bridge though, and I do like the second verse
Heart on the sleeve is alright when it's about a deceased loved one. At least it's not heart on the sleeve in a hideous sounding way like The End.

Matt is indeed awesome on this album. Super heavy.
His best PJ album.
100%
Gigaton is right there now too.
Agreed about Matt. This feels to me like his most complete contribution in a really long time, and possibly his most integrated performance in the band’s tenure.

He shines throughout Gigaton. Definitely his best since Binaural. And I agree that it might be the best.
