Eddie Vedder read the script and sent me the handwritten lyrics to "State of Love and Trust" in a brown paper bag. The words and music were his comment on love and relationships, the tumult and the bliss, the weight and the responsibility of putting your heart on the line. It meant a lot to me then, and it means a lot to me now. Even hearing the first notes brings me right back to a special and very passionate time in all our lives.

This just came on.
The song that started it all for me. (Well the unplugged version)
What a fucking song. There’s more energy and creativity bursting out of the seams than possible. It doesn’t sound like anything else of the time by them or anyone.
There’s complaining about Ed’s flailing and antics in another thread. I’d direct those complaining to this song and any performance of it from the time.

It’s such a Fucking brilliant song.
Yeah it is. Amazing chord changes, vocal melody, performances, passion.
Have them on shuffle all day. And wondering. How did the same period roughly speaking produce this and breath and yet also produce Deep? Which is all kinds of crap
They’re were mining a rich varied vein at the time. No question.

the best performance of this ever is Unplugged
That was what got me. And how. I didn’t get to hear them properly for a good while after that and I was kinda bummed. Saw the alive video and thought who the fuck is the Bono wannabe?
Glad to be wrong.
The studio and unplugged versions are just so immense though. Actually powerful.
Yeah, the Unplugged version of SOLAT, Black, & Porch started it all for me.

One of my top five. I say that about a lot their songs but this one could legitimately make the final cutdown. Aged really well for an early era track too. I actually like the sped up live versions too.
