I've only listened to an hour so far but it's impressive the research Yasi put into this. I thought I knew practically everything about the band's origins but there are little tidbits that I'm learning. She clearly read a ton as part of the prep for this series.

I'm a little more than halfway through the Bandsplain podcast, and just heard what might be one of my favorite parts so far. Kevin Clark (the guest) talks about when he was living in Brooklyn, circa 2011, and had friends who were in bands, and how he was obsessed with listening to Hunger Strike one day to the point where he asked his friend's band to cover it at show they were playing that night . They turned him down and told him to ask the opening band if they'd do it. He did, and he said he kept playing it over and over for this dude in the opening band, and the dude was very patient with him and listening to it before finally saying, I can't figure this out.

that dude was Mac Demarco.

I would love to hear Mac's take on Hunger Strike if he ever tried.

Bandsplain is doing a grunge series. first episode was 3 hours on the scene history (pearl jam focused) leading to TotD. First pearl jam episode is 5 hours. i am working through it. great history/research. this is great

Interesting because Yasi always makes fun of Pearl Jam. Unless someone else is headed it up for this episode.

I’ll check it out though. I can at least count on the guest to nerd out.

Her guest hates Pearl Jam

Part 2 is out now. It's 3.5 hours and covers Vitalogy to present day.

Yeah I lol'd at that story, partly because it reminded me of my own Mac DeMarco story from when I was road tripping in the US with some friends back in 2014. We stopped for some food by the side of the road in Big Sur. As we were sitting in the gutter eating, a bunch of kids in rolled in. We started talking and and they told us they were heading into the forest somewhere for a Mac DeMarco gig and that we should join them. At the time I had no idea who he was so I was like who the f is Mac DeMarco. One of kids points to the guy sitting next to me in the gutter and says "that is Mac DeMarco". I turned to Mac and ask "what kind of music do you play". He takes a puff, turns to me and says "rock 'n' roll, maaaan"

I like Kevin Clark, but I bet they could've found someone who's been into them from the beginning. He doesn't seem to like Dissident.

I would've died if you said he told you jizz jazz.

just finished bandsplain. I think Yasi had better takes than the lifelong fan Kevin Clarke in the back half of the catalog.

Neither a big fan of Binaural
Both like Riot Act
Split on S/T
They both really Backspacer
Lightning Bolt is just okay
Gigaton - Yasi really likes it. ‘grunge as a well aged wine.’ Kevin is not a fan.

So sick of hearing her say “babe.”

She seems to know more about them than the expert. I’m maybe a third of the way thru Part 1.

He’s not impressed me at all. Like you said, they couldn’t find anyone that’s been into PJ since before 2006 or whenever he got into them?

Finished Part 1. This Kevin Clark needs to go. In his mind Elderly Woman is their greatest anthem and he calls the third verse the bridge. Fucker doesn’t even know what a bridge is.

Pretty cool to see Yasi getting a shout on today's 10C Newsletter.
