David Berman Says Critics Enable Bad Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen Records

"If critics were harder on the musicians that they love, there would be better songs. But as they grow older and they lose their talent, critics refuse to let them know that and protect them, and they get to the point where they put out music that just isn’t up to the levels where they’ve already been. It must be very strange to live in the world of Willie Nelson or Bruce Springsteen or Pearl Jam. I don’t know what kind of handle they have on their own loss of talent. Obviously Willie Nelson understands that it’s been forty-five years since anyone’s really cared about any song of his, but I feel like I don’t see very much vocational unhappiness. I heard Springsteen was an unhappy person. I don’t know, I haven’t read his biography. But a lot of people in my field should be a lot more unhappy than they are. They go to press with bullshit."

Yes. Additionally, I think he is a dipshit.

I genuinely enjoy backspacer and self titled and lightning bolt. Sure they are different from previous material, but "loss of talent" .....fuck off, fellow! (To him--not you, Bammer)

I think the band kids themselves about what Eddie can still do vocally. He doesn't have a bad voice but they sure don't write songs geared towards what he can still do well.

I'm sure this was mentioned in this thread already but Better Man (a capella) is in the first ep of Netflix's The OA.

Just watching it for the first time now.

Music is such a subjective art form that we don’t have too many metrics for what makes “good music”—beyond having Eddie Vedder on vocals at least—so it stands to reason that one of the things we can trust is the objective rankings of Billboard’s Hot 100 list.

Yeah I kept wondering if it was cut off or something ... but no it’s carer. Weird.

That's funny because it doesn't seem strange to use "carer" in that context to me (an Australian commenting on an Australian news article posted by another Australian.) Pretty common usage of the word over here.
