I really admire a song that kinda subtly annoys me for a little while… then all of a sudden starts to appeal to me, then hooks me in and eventually I can’t get enough of it.

of all the band's lesser played songs, why no way is among them is a mystery to me.
I think it's one of the few pearl jam songs that sounds worse live. They never really got it to sound right.

Agreed, it’s very much a studio production. But I wish they could find a compelling live approach
It's definitely a beautiful studio recording, but I think the biggest issue with "No Way" live is that it was only tried out a few times in '98, and then not revisited again until 2009, when the band's capacity for performing quirky, nuanced songs in concert had significantly diminished. Some of those versions are solid from a performance standpoint, but standard objections to PRAMG live PJ apply to all of them; we don't really have a good quality version of them playing it during an upper-tier performance season, which is unfortunate. Of course, the fact that it was shelved for so long may indicate that the band never really felt like it came together, and indeed if memory serves the '98 versions are mostly pretty tentative. But there is one -- Atlanta 9/1 -- that is flawless, and shows IMO what a good live song it could have been if developed. Unfortunately it only exists as an audience source, but it's on a recent compilation I shared (still on the front page!) if there is any interest in checking it out. I'd love to see that show come out as a Vault release someday.

Good stuff. The 2000 and 2006 tours were probably their best chances to give “No Way” its justice live but for whatever reasons, they passed on it. I’ve never heard 9/1, gonna listen soon.
