Oh man, forgot about that. Looked for that album forever when I was younger. There's like a 10 minute version of "Face of Love", and I think "Long Road" runs almost 17 minutes

I started a new project last night- 7 disc compilation, roughly 550 minutes (that's over 9 hours, folks)

1991 - 1994 Ten/Vs/Vitalogy - 3 disc (each 70+ mins) compilation - assembling and re-tracking as many full songs that will fit. For example, I've split Vs. into the 2nd and 3rd discs. Vitalogy tunes are all on the 3rd disc, the Ten-era releases, b-sides, re-releases, etc... mostly on disc 1. Lost Dogs tracks, album re-issue bonus tracks, xmas singles, etc... Most of these recordings fit well together. Trying to keep all Dave A performances on discs 2 and 3

1995 - 1998 No Code/Yield - 2 discs, same theory on source material. Merkinball tunes, a couple of live tracks, maybe a couple Mirrorball tunes as well. All Jack Irons performances

1999 - 2000 - Binaural - 1 disc - re-tracked w/b-sides, xmas singles, TB2000

2001 - 2004- Riot Act - 1 disc - re-tracked w/b-sides, plus man of the hour & cold confession. These seem to fit well.

In my opinion, Pearl Jam effectively ended their 12 year run as a studio group / creative force with the release of Riot Act. I am including MOTH and cold confession, which takes it through 2004, 14 years since forming. I think CC was the last creatively aspiring tune they recorded (that we've heard). The evolution of the reception of S/T and Backspacer in the years since their release support that theory. Maybe LB will change that, but I highly doubt it (and i actually do enjoy the new tunes).

My attempt here is to present this 14 year run in a new and comprehensive way.

This thread is a good source, and I will use it and try to provide any additional input as I go through this project.

Not sure if anyone has given you much acknowledgement or feedback yet, but I for one am looking forward to seeing how this project of yours turns out

They're all about done. I will post them in the next few days. It has turned into 10 lists, each fitting on an audio disc. I added one with all of the studio cuts that didn't make the initial 7, sort of a full span "outtakes" list, plus 2 more with live tracks covering the 05-12 time period, decided to keep S/T and Backspacer out of the studio compilations like the others, not really sure why, just felt better to do it that way. I guess it maybe was because the recordings of the two albums don't fit together at all, and it's impossible to fill out a full 75-80 minutes with each album + unreleased songs from the period. Binaural and Riot Act were easy this way. I included some live covers prominent in this time period to fill out the discs, which means I feel like I should go back and create another list or two for the definitive covers from the earlier periods, maybe one for 91-98 and another covering the 00-03 tours.

I will post the 1st 10 in the coming days. Everything is at home, and I am swamped at work. The last two earlier covers list to follow.

So, at the end of this, there's enough material to fill 12 full audio discs (somewhere around 900-960 minutes, over 15 hours) of unique songs covering 20+ years. That's pretty incredible.

Ask and ye shall receive (1st three anyway). I've got most of the rest figured out, will be a while before i get them up here.

Unless noted, all original album songs are from the re-mix/re-master release. Ten-2008, Vs/Vitalogy Box Set. WIth only maybe 1 or 2 exceptions, everything in the 1st list is with Krusen, and the 2nd/3rd with Dave A.

1990-1991
Disc 1
1. Once (w/M/S)
2. Why Go
3. Brother (Ten re-issue w/vocals)
4. Black (RVM)
5. Alive (RVM)
6. Hold On (Vs. re-issue / acoustic)
7. Oceans
8. Jeremy
9. Wash (Lost Dogs)
10. Footsteps (Lost Dogs)
11. Breath (MB Demo / Ten re-issue)
12. Hunger Strike (ToD)
13. Porch
14. Garden
15. Acoustic #1 (PJ20 Soundtrack, edited-fade out)
16. Deep
17. Just a Girl (MD Demo / Ten re-issue)
18. Release (Edited to fit, cut M/S, 6:07 track length)
Total Time: 79:44

Hold On is the only recording that probably came after Dave A joined, but it was a song from the Ten sessions, and there are no drums here, so it fits great. Obviously he isn't on Hunger Strike, either

1992-1993
Disc 2
1. Go
2. Even Flow (single/video w/Dave A)
3. Animal
4. State of Love and Trust (RVM)
5. WMA
6. Angel ('93 xmas single)
7. Alone (Go single w/Dave A)
8. Dissident
9. Bee Girl (Lost Dogs, track cut down to 1:45)
10. Crazy Mary (Vs. re-issue / VW tribute)
11. Sonic Reducer ('92 xmas single)
12. Cready Stomp (Vs. re-issue)
13. Rats
14. Glorified G
15. Let Me Sleep (Lost Dogs)
16. Dirty Frank (Even Flow Single)
17. I've Got a Feeling (Japan Ten / ?)
18. Leash
19. Yellow Ledbetter (Lost Dogs)
Total Time: 73:06

Let Me Sleep was on the 1st xmas single, so probably before Dave A. But, again, it fits right here. Doesn't really sound like a 1st disc tune. Pretty sure I've got a feeling was recorded with Dave A. Same with Dirty Frank, even though they were both on the original extended Ten. I changed my mind and chose the Even Flow single version. I think it is a much cleaner mix, and there's just more originality to it. The Lost Dogs mix just seemed muffled and they changed a bunch of shit.

By the way, that version of Even Flow between Go and Animal kicks ass. I initially used the old FM recording of Bee Girl, I liked the contrast to Dissident. But, the Lost Dogs is just so clean, and you still get the contrast. Cready Stomp in between Rats and Sonic Reducer from the xmas single is a nice fit.

1993-1994
Disc 3
1. Last Exit
2. Spin the Black Circle
3. Daughter
4. Blood
5. Tremor Christ
6. Out of My Mind (Not For Your single, Live '94)
7. Hard to Imagine (Lost Dogs / Vs. sessions)
8. Corduroy
9. Not For You
10. Elderly Woman...
11. Whipping
12. Satan's Bed
13. Better Man (Vitalogy re-issue guitars/organ only)
14. Rearviewmirror
15. Aya Davanita
16. Nothingman
17. Bugs
18. Immortality
19. Indifference
Total Time: 75:38

Most of these are straight from the albums. These Vs. tracks I thought fit better with Vitalogy tunes than with the Ten tunes. It was hard to find a place for the regular version of Better Man. The stripped down version is great coming after NFY and before RVM, I think. Blood>Tremor Christ>Out of my Mind> Hard to Imagine>Corduroy is the sequence that I love and that's unique, and not just re-tracked from the albums. I went back and added Aye Davanita. Not sure why I left that out. I left out Pry, to as well. Didn't feel i needed a transition track, and it was always kind of a throw away for me any way.

There are some nice transition moments in these 3 lists if you actually listen through this way. For example, why they didn't put Satan's bed after Whipping, I don't know. There's a whip at the beginning of Satan's, right after an outro saying "they're whipping" for shit's sake. Seriously, though, there's some nice musical transitions, too with these sequences. I tried to create sequences that minimized the impact of the relative volume and style difference between the different recordings. I have subsequently gone back and adjusted the volume on some of the tracks to try and equalize these a little. Man, the Ten re-issue and RVM were fucking loud.

I think this may be how I listen to the first three albums for a while, with all these other tunes cut in and re-ordered. Makes the old seem quite new.

You can experiment with the original and remastered/remixed versions of the songs if you have some rough passages.

No. It is not. We are searching for the various different recordings/demos of songs where more than one is known to exist

Next four, plus the outtakes, continuation from above. Again, all songs are from the album cut unless noted.

First two are the Jack Irons era

1995-1998
Disc 4
1. Sometimes
2. Hail, Hail
3. Faithfull
4. Lukin
5. Red Mosquito
6. Given To Fly
7. I Got Shit (Merkinball)
8. Falling Down (Red Rock '95 live, edit)
9. Smile
10. Leatherman (GTF single)
11. Do the Evolution
12. MFC
13. Wishlist
14. Present Tense
15. Habit
16. Dead Man (single b-side/demo)
17. Mankind
18. Jeremy (Red Rocks '95 live, edit)
19. Low Light
20. Around the Bend
Total Time: 77:47

Not much to comment on, I couldn't leave off the two gems from the Red Rocks show, recordings are decent enough and provide a nice change atmosphere. Need to edit them back a little and fade in/out.

1995-1998
Disc 5
1. Long Road (Merkinball)
2. All Night (Lost Dogs)
3. Brain of J (edit)
4. No Way
5. In My Tree
6. Pilate
7. Who You Are
8. U (Wishlist single, not LD)
9. Hummus (Yield, hidden)
10. Leaving Here (Lost Dogs)
11. Against the 70's (Mike Watt/Ed, edit)
12. <red dot>
13. I'm Open
14. Act of Love (Live with Neil Young - Wash DC 95 (SRS),edit)
15. Off He Goes
16. Black Red Yellow (Lost Dogs)
17. Don't Gimme No Lip (Lost Dogs)
18. Push Me Pull Me
19. In Hiding
20. Words Seem Out of Place (Improv-Melbourne 1995, edit)
21. All Those Yesterdays
22. Sunburn (demo)
Total: 79:27

Started off with Long Road, 1st time not with the corresponding album opener. Throwing Hummus into the mix sets up the variety at tracks 9-14. Man, it's tough to track 20 song lists...I look at Sunburn as kind of a hidden track at the end

1999-2000 (All Binaural, Lost Dogs, TB2000)
Disc 6
1. Breakerfall
2. God's Dice
3. Grievance
4. Fatal
5. Sad
6. Rival
7. Of the Girl
8. In the Moonlight (edit)
9. Thin Air
10. Drifting
11. Foldback (edit)
12. Education (edit)
13. Nothing as it Seems
14. Insignificance
15. Harmony (edit)
16. Light Years
17. Strangest Tribe
18. Sleight of Hand
19. Evacuation
20. Hitchhiker
21. Soon Forget
22. Thunderclap
23. Parting Ways (edit down to 3:46, cut writer's block)
Total: 80:05 before small edits above

The small edits above are just to fit on a disc, cutting the end back a little, quicker, effective fadeouts on the TB2000 tracks and a few secs out of the end of the long silence of the other two. Just to get it around 79:50

Just re-tracked Binaural. I've had this sequence in mind for quite some time, and I know it's been done many, many times. This is my best take.

2001-2004 (All Riot Act, Lost Dogs, or as noted)
Disc 7
1. Can't Keep
2. Save You
3. Love Boat Captain
4. Down
5. 1/2 Full
6. Green Disease
7. Other Side
8. Arc
9. Help Help
10. You Are
11. Thumbing My Way
12. Cropduster
13. I Am Mine
14. Man of the Hour (RVM)
15. Undone
16. Ghost
17. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away (I am Sam soundtrack, edit)
18. Last Soldier (xmas single 01, live, edit)
19. Get Right
20. Bushleaguer
21. All or None
22. 4-20-02 (Lost Dogs hidden)
Total: 78:30

Riot Act re-tracked. I debated on Last Soldier and Hide Your Love, ultimately they work here, but not many other spots. I took out Cold Confession, didn't seem right to put it here. Went on the last disc. I tried to fill the disc obviously, but for my money, tracks 1-14 + 21 is a damn near perfect record.

2005-2012 Live (Backspacer + S/T + other/covers)
Discs 8 & 9
I've got two live disc full length lists tracked and edited (but not very well) from 05-12 covering S/T and Backspacer, plus some of the cover staples from the era. Want to listen through. I was liberal with picking the right "versions", just wanted it to flow. I won't post those tracklists right now, but I think they work decently.

Outtakes (91-12)
Disc 10
1. Let it Ride (S/T demo, edit for better end fade)
2. Puzzles and Games (Binaural demo)
3. Speed of Sound (BS demo)
4. State of Love and Trust (Mookie demo, Ten re-issue)
5. Hold On (Ten rough mix demo)
6. Anything in Between (Binaural demo)
7. Chinese (Ten Demo)
8. Better Days (xmas single)
9. Golden State (xmas single)
10. Cold Confession (S/T demo)
11. Love Reign O'er Me (xmas single)
12. Santa God (xmas single)
13. Santa Cruz (xmas single)
14. Ole (single)
15. Be Like Wind (PJ20)
16. Given to Fly (PJ20 instrumental)
17. Daddy Could Swear I Declare (Mookie Demo)
18. Gone (S/T Demo)
19. Untitled (PJ20 McCready instrumental)
20. I'm Still Here (Lost Dogs promo, source?)
Total: 77:20

So many choices here. Obviously tough to mix and match these. Left out some of the Ten re-issue demo stuff (among other things), couldn't bring myself to put goat or 2,000 mile blues on here. Better Days is a nice shift after the guitar attack from tracks 4-7, and introduces a variety of styles. Wanted an interesting mix of deep catalog/demo stuff. I tried not to put Ole on there, but hey... This is just a big grab bag that's hopefully pleasing to listen through .

------------------

That makes ten full 75 min+ discs spanning everything up to Lightning Bolt and the 2013 tour, presented in a variety of manners that I think works for the history of the band. First five discs segmented by drummers, Binaural & Riot Act complete with b-sides, and live recordings of their later albums. The only thing it lacks is some type of recognition of the live shows/covers in the 1990s and the 2000 and 2003 tours. I will leave that to more capable hands.

Great work hlniv, a unique and interesting approach to compiling the back catalogue :nice:

I'm going to put these together in a playlist and take a listen...

Thanks. It's been fun doing it.

I made a couple of small changes to 2&3. I switched dirty frank and I've got a feeling, and used the even flow b-side dirty frank- much cleaner IMO, just need to turn up the volume. I also added aye davanita, not sure why I left that off
