By either accident or design, they ditched the backing track for this one at the Auckland show - it's like night and day, a really noticeable improvement over every previous live attempt.
Geez. What backing track? I guess I haven't listened closely enough.
You know, the keyboard pad that fades in as Matt's counting the song off and that constant percussive melody throughout the verses. The Auckland version is, by contrast, totally live; Boom plays that little melody on keys instead (he may have been doing so already but it was somewhat buried by the loop before) and the guitars are much more to the fore.
I guess Ill have to listen with headphones closely. Heard a couple horrible live verrsions and gave up on that song.
I had too.
It should've sounded like the Auckland version on record.
are you going to be putting together a tour comp?
I'll probably end up making some kind of 80-minute (or thereabouts) mix from the Australian/NZ shows at least.
I'd certainly be interested in a general Lightning Bolt live mix, like my Black Market Avocado compilation, but it would depend on whether really solid live versions of some of the songs emerge.
I made a 2013 mix from the 6 or so shows I have. My ISP is throttling me to death so I can't upload anything until I change providers, but here's the tracklist:
1. Of the Girl [Calgary, 12-02] 2. Hard to Imagine [Calgary, 12-02] 3. Lightning Bolt [Portland, 11-29] 4. Mind Your Manners [Calgary, 12-02] 5. Animal [Portland, 11-29] 6. Deep [Portland, 11-29] 7. Even Flow [Calgary, 12-02] 8. All Night [San Diego, 11-21] 9. Pilate [Seattle, 12-06] 10. Infallible [Vancouver, 12-04] 11. Immortality [Oklahoma City, 11-16] 12. Let Me Sleep [Seattle, 12-06] 13. Yellow Moon [Oklahoma City, 11-16] 14. Parting Ways [Oklahoma City, 11-16] 15. Black [Oklahoma City, 11-16] 16. Spin the Black Circle [Portland, 11-29] 17. Rockin' in the Free World [San Diego, 11-21]

I've listened to the bootleg of this a few times, and Infallible is certainly better. Didn't notice it so much at the show

This song just keeps digging its claws in... Live version is probably a little better... But still, even the album version is a post-RA highlight for me

The music in the verses is not too far removed from that awful Imagine Dragons sound. Ed's melody, lyrics, and singing are all really lame. And then the chorus is an attempt at that unfurl-y LeAnn Rimes kind of pop chorus and it just does not work at all. As with "Can't Deny Me," Brendan O'Brien tries to cover up the total lack of interesting musical ideas with a bunch of superfluous little percussion flourishes. Bad bad bad, I'll revisit it in another ten years

The live version really exposes it for what it is.
