Animal may be about a combination of things - one thing that was interesting about the Vs interview was how Ed talked about the double-meaning of 'Go', both about a relationship but also about the band & the crowd
this quote makes it sound like Animal could either be about 'gang rape' or 'everybody vs. Ed'
but maybe it's both, where ed feels like he is being gang raped

The actual meaning for "Animal" has usually been confused by fans with some thinking it's about the band's hatred towards the media and others thinking it's about gang rape. In an interview with Melody Maker in 1993, vocalist Eddie Vedder stated:
"I don't wanna talk about [who the anger is directed at]. It's not so much personal, it's just, some person at the record company said the other day that they wanted the vocals turned up. He wanted people to understand exactly what I was singing. So I told him what it was about and he said, 'You're right. Let's leave the vocals as they are. Maybe we don't really want people to understand it."

me either.
generally, i don't really care to know the actual meaning of songs, because i like to adapt them to my own life and use them to work through situations and emotions.
any time I've discovered the actual meaning or inspiration of a song after i've adapted it to myself, i'm always disappointed.

Considering that the original working album title was Five Against One, I can't imagine that the line (and the song in general) deals with Ed vs. everyone else. I just assumed it was the band vs. the crippling weight of everything that came with becoming so big so fast such as fans and the media that wanted every piece of the band (and mostly Ed).
