At most, this should've been an Ed solo song. The band sure did make a dull song out of it.

I agree with this sentiment. I always liked Gone but that's probably because of the personal connection it had to me when it first came out.

one of about a handful of studio tracks that i deem outright bad. not even good enough to call paint-by-numbers.

I think that of all the studio “real” songs, Gone is the worst. I don’t think I can say anything that hasn’t been said already. I think the studio version is extra painful. The acoustic guitar in the intro is far too slow. Musically, it COULD be a good song, but it’s just so awful lyrically. Fuck you, Gone.

it's ed working in complete sleep mode. how it didn't forever stay as a demo is dumbfounding, especially considering they had (at least) Let It Ride and Cold Confession and Of The Earth in their back pocket.

Truly amazing the same guy wrote a song like Grievance just a few years prior.

i have an rational hate for the song b/c of the origin story in which it was added on super late in the process of S/T, which, by all accounts, was a slog in the studio (and by that I mean the good kind of slog aka hard work). Gone was the canary in a coal mine for post S/T - simple demos, less work, less collaboration, more BOB.

It was the turning point, no doubt.

I dont care for listening to it ever.

The times I've heard it live im usually enjoying it come the chorus because it does...."soar" for lack of better terms.

thanks, p.t.

I'm a pretty big fan of that whole album, 'slow.

I like the chords, the general vibe, the lyrics - it all works for me.

I use to like "Gone" then I realised it's probably the reason "let it ride" was left off the album.

Now I'm not such a big fan.

The AOL version kicks ass. But that's about it

Its a weird one for me....i hated the first time i listen to ed´s delivery in vegas i think? Then the demo was kinda the same...and the band version...loved it. Then for a looong time i thought it was awful.
These days i like it.

I disliked it until the WOR2 show in 2013 and something about that version changed my perspective on it. It's a solid 3 stars now.

These are some of my least favorite lyrics in the entire PJ catalog. "The lights of the city only look good when I'm speeding"; "take me for one last ride"; "the gas in my tank feels like money in the bank" -- these sound like taglines from a "Fast and the Furious" straight-to-DVD sequel.
