I always saw the "return to form" tag as being a response to a "weird" album.

Yield to the weirdness of No Code. Avocado to the weirdness of Riot Act. Gigaton I don't find to be weird at all though.

Perhaps the band has been around long enough where people have different ideas of what "return to form" means based on what they perceive to be Pearl Jam's natural form? I think that one of the band's great strengths is that their style is all over the map. So describing something as a "return to form" is essentially pointless.

That's all true. But it's also pretty much how Yield was marketed and presented as well. Yield is the last pearl jam album to be unequivocally canonized by the fan base, but this was exactly how it was described as well. The 'return to form' pearl jam meme stems from Yield. And that's probably not an accurate assessment of what Yield is as an album (or S/T, though it's probably a little more on point there), but it is how we were asked to receive it

S/T maybe feels more that way because it comes on the heels of Binaural/Riot Act.

Yield definitely was the first "Return to form"

Agreed Yield was the first to be marketed that way, but it still had a good amount of experimentation going on. Doesn’t sound like that’s the case here.

We shall see. Some of that might be that the deeper you get in the harder it is to say you've experimented since the scope of possible catalog referents is so much greater. Not that it's impossible

I dont know, many reviewers are comparing experiemtnation similar to that of No Code and Binauralish....whatever that might mean.

Sounds like judging the record off these first two singles may not be the best approach. SONG WISE NOT PRODUCTION TRAG

See, the way they describe these songs is almost thrilling, almost makes me second guess my preconceived notions…Except that I don’t agree with the accolades they throw at the two songs that have already been released at all

See that’s exactly what I’m talking about. I’d love to say “hell yes!” But he also indicated the title track sounded like Sabbath, and stupid Running sounded like The Police, so I shall be requiring a salt lick

Yes, it certainly sounds pretty cooked.
