I really like this song, and I find the album as a whole very hard to criticise (maybe even to a fault, if I was to be cynical), but I've realised this song has the only Matt moment I'm underwhelmed by, in an album full of great Matt moments
it's far from a deal breaker, but I wish he'd find a way to start these faster, non-punk alt rockers other than just going BASS-SNARE!... BASS... SNARE... BASS... SNARE... BASS... SNARE
goddamit Matt, a flam, a falling triplet, anything to let this song (and this album) out the gate with some colour and ferocity; does he remember how he started God's Dice?
luckily it's only a few seconds, then the song starts proper
I said it was one of my least favorite Pearl Jam openers but that is rapidly becoming untrue.
I think there is something a bit generic in the riff (reminds me of my least favorite Pearl Jam songs, like the Binaural rockers), and the chorus lyrics again feel generic and cheesy to me (We used to laugh, we used to sing, etc) especially when combined with the riff (But Ive always found these types of PJ rockers can feel a bit flat to me)
BUT THAT BEING SAID
The more I listen the more Im liking it, ESPECIALLY after that phenomenal live version where they sound almost like the album...
And I think what I really like about the song, is exactly what i like about Last Exit. I know PJ fans love Last Exit, me I don't ever listen to it as its own song. It doesn't FEEL like its own song to me. It feels like the opening song from Vitalogy. But it is perfect at that.
And this album is another one that really benefits from an entire listen. And this song sets the tone for the album...I like that the lyrics have call-forward to things like Setting Sun, that they start the storytelling that will go through the whole album, and that it has a sort of anxious and tense start that seems to start an emotional journey that almost makes this like a concept album.
Its a song that sets the tone for the album, without giving too much away early. It's like starting your appetite. So in that sense, the fact it isn't like a 5-star amazing song actually works in its favor.
This will be a GREAT opener for their shows, or a song to play 4th to kick off after some soft openers.
So while I still don't think it's an amazing or great song on its own, it is starting to feel like a really perfect opener to a great album and so this song is getting more thumbs up in my book over time.
(And puts it way above things like Breakerfall that are both a bad song and a bad opener, in my opinion, since they don't really vibe with the album as a whole)
