Upper hand into this?!?!
are you serious????
That was my exact reaction at the record store listening party. Upper Hand and Won't Tell had just completely destroyed what I knew of modern Pearl Jam and I was buzzing AND THEN THIS FUCKING RIFF!!!!

It has been highlighted by others, but love Jeff's base in this
I just came to this thread to say the same thing. The bass really is the highlight of this song to me, especially with headphones on. That Mike solo on the end is really kicked up a notch on good headphones too. I just with the mix wasn't so muddy so that the solo could stand on it's own more much like Alive, because it really does have a similar vibe to me. This is the most early 90's sounding original song the band has put out since that time period. It could easily come off as forced in that respect but it doesn't, they just absolutely own it and pull it off. It's glorious, but might not even be in my top 5 favorite on this release, the album is that good.
I need somebody better with words to me to articulate it but this comes off so much more effective to me at sounding like the old Pearl Jam than Quick Escape did, even if I initially loved it. Maybe because I think this song would have been popular if it came out in the 90s and quick escape was only loved because it sounded like that era but would likely not be a very popular song if it was actually made then.
the riff obviously has 'breath' dna, but something about it reminds me of the 'black' riff. it's almost like a ten demo. so, good start lol.
EV sounds great on this, but i'm trying to pin point what it is or where it's coming from. maybe yield?
mike mccready. i don't care if he's stuck in the same bluesy thing he's been doing most of his career. it gives me a boner. i'm gonna cry when i heard this outro live.

Love how PJ is just open, unleashed and soaring in this tune. Eddie always sounds amazing but when he lets loose like in this one it is a thing of beauty.

i think it actually plays like there’s no bridge. it runs through a bunch of chorus/verse hybrids, and then repeats but with lots more guitar solo and drum fills

Hmmm yeah true, actually I hear a bridge at 2:02 and then the later solo melds in to the outtro. It's constructed in an interesting way. Not in the same way as Faithfull, but that is off script in its construction too.
