Just played it for Mrs Wease. She said “this sounds like something else they’ve done.” She liked it tho. I can’t fucking wait to see this live.
I honestly don't know that it is, even though we all think so. Hold On is closeish. I think it's really, truly, that this has, in some magical kind of way, just bottled what Pearl Jam (or this element of Pearl Jam) down to its essence. It feels familiar because its DNA comes from the experience of listening to so many other songs.
I didn't really understand the Ten comparison at first, but upon hearing the whole song, I think a lot of that is stemming from the solo at the end, which is really reminiscent of Alive in particular in a way they probably have never been (or tried to be) since. I think stip said this in his review, but you could easily hear the crowd fist-pumping and yelling "yeah" like they do with Alive during the coda of this song.

the solo does have alivr/breath vibes, but there is also an expansiveness to it that is of the era that after dissident they walked away of (it peeks out in GTF in Hiding). i think thats also what people are connecting. at least for me, i have that feeling long before the solo. its really locked in after the the first few progressions of the riff, matt’s fill, and first lyrical couplet. ‘oh, it’s that kind of song’

I agree with your bottled PJ take. But this also sounds a lot like other songs. Hold On, sure. But Breath is the biggest that comes to mind for me.

good call, I hear both. my first reaction was, wow this riff sounds like it was written for the Singles soundtrack.
