Eilish herself had variants and various boxes with her latest album too. I don’t think she had exclusive indie store ones too. Find it kinda weird to see her complaining about it.

She is enlightened now. Probably she’s been following my RM posts.

Bros over @ the pit tell me they’re getting all 12 variants.

It’s a strange, strange thing to me.

the best time to complain about getting some is right after you got yours.

Eilish gets it

Yeah maybe she is dealing with it the way PJ dealt in the 90s too. Don’t know. But she has a new album in the can and I’m sure they will make variants of that, maybe even the new thing were they put different b sides in different version without telling you

Variants are wasteful. Most of what we consume is wasteful. I love physical books, but in a world where kindles exist they are wasteful. But if variant record pressings (or the wasteful vinyl industry since streaming exists) disappeared tomorrow the impact on the world's carbon footprint is probably negligible.

Be mad at crypto currency, which is just as stupid as variants (dumber) and actually has an enormously devastating environmental impact

I've got no real beef with what Eilish said, though. It's well meaning posturing, but that's fine. Most public declarations are. It is nearly impossible to practice what you preach in every aspect of your life.

For a period of 5 years (late 1992 through 1997) Pearl Jam was the rare band/artist that actually managed to practice what they preached in a totalizing way - with the press blackouts, no videos, ticketmaster boycott, etc. It was a cool thing to support and tangentially be a part of.

But the values shift happened with Yield. No one likes to talk about it because people are attached to the album, but that's when Pearl Jam turned their back on their celibacy. The point afterwards at which you start to care is the point at which you start to be disappointed in the music. Sometimes, to help explain away why the music means less to you, you'll make the 'they only care about making money/releasing art to be popular' argument. But again, Yield is the pivot point. Any line drawn after Yield is largely arbitrary and based on personal preference.

Trag has been riding his horse to exhaustion, but at some point 100 pages back he said he could make his peace with sex crimes if the music sounded good to him. As would we all.

The sex crimes. What I said (paraphrasing) was that I was more inclined to overlook more heinous transgressions if/when I don't feel any emotional attachment to the artist; but because PJ entered my life on a vehicle of ideological righteousness, that’s how I’d tend to view them going forward.

And then later I said that their abandonment of certain ideals doesn’t make their music worse, but it is indicative of the flawed creative process that leads to worse music.

It's not a charitable read. But is it wrong? I recall you feeling slightly sheepish about it.

Yes, but only for as long as I still love their music.
