Is this the first time they used strings in a song?
There are all sorts of heavily processed instruments and other ambient sounds, really one of the most “produced” tracks in their catalog.
Who’s credited with what instrument?
jeff plays a stand up bass with a bow in the dead man walking concert ... hitting the bottom part of the strings near the bridge to get more harmonic effects
it emulates some of the sounds on the recording...

There’s a cello credited on Ten but doesn’t say which song. Jeremy?
Yep, definitely in "Jeremy." You can hear it a bit more clearly on the rough mix that made its way online a little while back, and Rick Beato mentions it in his song analysis video.

This makes sense. I think the liner notes from Lost Dogs credit Ed with vocals and guitar, Jeff with bass, and Jack with percussion.
What a fantastic song. I remember coming home from a stay at my sister’s house and knowing that my “Off He Goes” single came in. Dead Man was great right from the first play. Very atmospheric and Eddie’s vocal track is great. I love how much bass there is in the song. Sonically it is very deep.
Always liked this one and thought it would have fit nicely on No Code

Yeah it could take the I'm Open slot
Agree...Knowing now that they had left off "Black Red Yellow" , "Dead Man" , & "All Night" makes the inclusion of "I'm Open" all the more frustrating.
